Obituary - Todd Michael Staum

Todd Michael Staum, age 61, of Paola, Kansas passed away on July 5, 2025, after battling cancer. Todd passed at home surrounded by loved ones.

Todd was born in Vermillion, South Dakota to Clayton and Mary Ellen Staum on August 15, 1963. He grew up in Elk Point, South Dakota where he graduated in 1981.

In 1986, Todd married Mary Guillaume. They had 2 children, Janna and Derek. That marriage ended in divorce. In 2008, Todd married Shelly Staum.

Todd will always be remembered for his love of family and friends, his kind heart, and witty personality. Todd was always willing to give his time at benefits and special events. His love of cooking was evident as he enjoyed cooking for family, friends and even catering events. A core memory for the grandkids is having a pancake war in the kitchen after a sleepover. Todd was always up for shenanigans even if it meant destroying the kitchen. Another love in his life was his Harley Davidson trike. He seldom rode the open roads with no destination in mind. He loved to find a spot to ride to for a meal or a cold beverage. Traveling was a mutual love for Todd and Shelly. They took many adventurous trips - some just the two of them, and some with family or friends. Jamaica was one of Todd’s favorite destinations.

Todd was a Trustee at the Paola Fraternal Order of Eagles. He also volunteered as one of the cooks for the breakfasts served there on the weekends. In his earlier years, Todd was a youth wrestling coach where he was proud of taking kids to state tournaments. Todd loved watching his daughter, Janna play basketball and his son, Derek compete on the wrestling mat.

In the 1990s Todd began his career in the asphalt business becoming a Plant Operator for Superior Bowen. Todd took pride in his work and built close friendships with many co-workers.

Todd is survived by his wife Shelly, daughter Janna Staum, son Derek Staum, stepson R.J. Trumbly (Jenny) and stepdaughter Lora Trumbly. Todd and Shelly have 6 grandchildren: Kayden Ditch, Urijah Ditch, Kyndall Christiano, Noah Trumbly, Grant Trumbly and Jordan Trumbly. Todd is also survived by 4 siblings: Scott Staum (Kelly), Dawn Staum, Danny Staum and Candace Petersen (Kelly). Todd is preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Mary Ellen Staum, and grandparents.

Todd will be laid to rest July 12, 2025. A graveside service will take place at Paola Cemetery at noon, followed by a Celebration of Life luncheon at the Paola Eagles located at 26433 Eagle Dr., Paola, Kansas. On July 19, 2025, Todd will be taken to his hometown to be laid to rest next to his parents at the Elk Point Cemetery in Elk Point, South Dakota. A Celebration of Life dinner will follow at the Elk Point American Legion Hall located at 103 E. Main St, Elk Point, South Dakota.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Paola Fraternal Order of Eagles. Todd devoted time to helping improve the organization and this will help carry on his legacy.
