Do Your Joints Hurt? Changing Your Diet May Ease Your Pain

Eating these foods can lower inflammation, which may reduce pain and stiffness.

Do your knees, hips or fingers feel achy sometimes? If so, you may want to make a few changes to what you eat. Certain foods may help ease pain in your joints by fighting inflammation in your body. Inflammation causes joints to feel stiff and sore, and by finding ways to lower the inflammation, you may just notice some relief from the discomfort it causes.

Here are some foods that may help keep your joints feeling good:

Fatty fish. Salmon, tuna, mackerel and other cold-water fish are full of omega-3 fatty acids, which help quiet inflammation so your joints feel less stiff and painful. Eating a few servings each week can support joint health over time.

Nuts and seeds. Almonds, walnuts, pistachios and pine nuts contain healthy fats that fight inflammation. Just a small handful a day can help slow down the pain and swelling around your joints.

Colorful fruits and leafy veggies. Strawberries and blueberries contain antioxidants that help protect joints. Citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, which supports tissues and keeps joints healthy. Dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale and broccoli are packed with vitamins that keep bones strong.

Olive oil. Noted for its heart health benefits, olive oil contains healthy fats and antioxidants that help ease inflammation. Using it for cooking or salad dressing instead of butter and seed oils can be gentler on your joints.

Turmeric and ginger. These spices have natural compounds that help reduce the body’s inflammatory response. Turmeric contains curcumin and ginger has other plant compounds that can ease joint pain and swelling.

Whole grains, beans and plant proteins. Wild rice, beans, lentils, sweet potatoes and tofu provide fiber and nutrients that lower inflammation over time. They also give your body lasting energy and support overall health.

Green tea. With antioxidants that may help protect cartilage, green tea is a joint-friendly addition to your diet.

How Food Helps Your Joints

These foods contain nutrients like omega-3s, antioxidants and vitamins that help calm the inflammation that makes joints hurt. When you eat more of them and cut back on processed foods, it can help reduce inflammation, which is good for your body in many ways, including easing joint pain.

A Mediterranean-style eating pattern, which focuses on plants, fish, healthy fats and whole grains, is a great way to include these foods in your diet. Not only can this way of eating improve joint health by lowering inflammation, but it may also help you reach a healthy weight. Carrying extra weight puts stress on joints like hips and knees, making pain worse. Losing even small amounts of weight can reduce the pressure on joints, helping you move more easily and reducing pain.

Tips for Changing Your Diet

You don’t have to dramatically overhaul your diet overnight to see results. By just making small changes, you may find that your joints feel a little better over time. Your health may improve in other ways as well. Here are a few easy tweaks to get started:

Add berries to your breakfast or have nuts as a snack

Use olive oil instead of butter or refined seed oils

Cook with turmeric or ginger to add flavor instead of salt

Eat fish or beans a few times a week in place of red meat

Eating better isn’t a magic cure for joint pain, but you may find that adding these foods can make a difference by reducing inflammation. This not only helps improve joint pain and gets you moving better but may also offer other health benefits.

What's Up by LeRoy Cook

 Cutting it close

Rain adds a bit of moisture to the air, producing early-morning fog after clear nights, as we encountered over the weekend. Still and all, it’s been a great stretch of fall flying weather; Harrisonville and Lamar had successful airport open-house/fly-in events and pilots were able to make flights with adjustments for the showers.

Some of the aircraft movements noted at Butler last week were a Cessna 210 Turbo Centurion, a Cessna Skyhawk and a Bellanca Citabria. Tom Bowles was in from Kansas City Downtown airport with his Turbo Skylane RG. Locally, Delaney Rindal ferried in a Cessna 172, the SkyDive KC Caravan journeyed to Iowa and back and Jeremie and Natalee Platt took the kids to the Lamar fly-in with the family Grumman Tiger.

We’re informed that there will be a fly-in at the Gardner, Kansas airport next Saturday, always a grand get-together of antique and experimental airplanes on the well-kept grass runways. Breakfast will be served from 7:30, with lunch available from 11:30 to 1:00.

One of the week’s notable worldwide aviation news items was the disaster that didn’t happen at Manchester, England. A RyanAir flight from Pisa, Italy to Prestwick, Scotland ran into heavy storm weather as it was attempting to land, missing its first approach to the airport and, after a lengthy holding pattern, it couldn’t get down on its second try. The pilots then diverted to Edinburgh, which also had unlandable condtions, so they finally backtracked to Manchester and got the airplane on the ground, with a reported six minutes of fuel remaining in the Boeing 737-800’s tanks. There was no going around on that landing.

A lot of AI-generated words were tossed around last week over the Federal government shutdown’s effect on airline flights, what with the already-stressed air traffic control system. Controllers were told to show up to work, even though they can’t be paid until the shutdown is over, and some didn’t comply. Burbank control tower out in California went unstaffed with airliners arriving, but Los Angeles Approach control took over sequencing of flights. Like we’ve always said, controllers don’t control aircraft, only the airspace and runways.

Canadian airline WestJet has laid off 44 pilots, who happen to be over the 65-year age limit for airline pilots outside of Canada. There’s no mandatory age limit in the Dominion, but trying to schedule crews with a senior citizen flying so they wouldn’t leave Canadian airspace was becoming too difficult, so they had no choice but to terminate the aged-out pilots. It’s not that they can’t fly, it’s just the legalities involved.

How long can someone keep flying? As long as they are healthy. I’m reminded of my friend at the Bolivar airport who took his Aeronca Chief up for a few landings on his 100th birthday. After proving his point, he sold it, but still drove out the airport every day.

A crew from Purdue University is heading to Nikumaroro atoll in the South Pacific next month, where its to investigate reports of an underwater object resembling Amelia Earhart’s 1937-crashed airplane in the lagoon. The Earhart-Noonan wreck has been a big mystery for 88 years, so maybe we’ll finally see it solved.

Our question from last week’s column asked how many of the famous World War II “Tuskegee Airmen” black pilots remain alive. Sadly, none; the last one died on September 25, George Hardy, age 100. For next week’s quiz, can a pilot allow an intoxicated individual to fly on their aircraft? You can send your answers to kochhaus1@gmail.com

Slight rain chances, moderate temps this week

The big picture: Showers linger for Monday morning, and return for Friday evening. In between, another significant warmup into the 80's with a mix of sunshine and clouds.

Did you know?

In case of an emergency, it's crucial to dial 911 for immediate assistance. However, an unfortunate issue arises in our area where emergency calls may mistakenly go to Vernon County instead of Bates County due to our location between two cell towers when calling on a cell phone. This can result in delays in emergency services response.
To ensure a swifter response in Rich Hill, there is a direct number for the Rich Hill Fire and Police Department Dispatch. You can reach them at 417-395-2222.
Your safety matters, and knowing the right contact can make a difference in critical situations. Remember to save the direct number for quick access when needed.
Stay informed, stay safe!
