Weekly report from the Henry County Sheriff's Office
A little help has a huge positive impact
A photo album has been added to the Bates County Museum showing the results of the Town-to-Village Water Project. A bit over the goal of $10,000 was raised in 2021/22 by the caring people of Bates County and a few friends from neighboring counties. This money provided 13 water sources for about 120 villagers in the mountains in Napal.
This is life changing for these people as they no longer spend their days going down the mountain and carrying water back up.
Again, many thanks to all who made this possible- stop by the museum and check out the wonderful pictures.
Shown are Debbie Norman and museum curator Tiffany Blaser.
Obituary - William "Bill" Grimes
Bill met the love of his life, Judith Foster, while attending Highland Park High School. Their friendship blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and they were married in October 1961. Together, Bill and Judy shared 64 wonderful years filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
After graduating from high school, Bill joined the U.S. Army, where he proudly served as a mechanic. His strong sense of duty and responsibility led him to return home when his father’s health began to fail, a decision that reflected the deep family values that guided his life.
Bill was known for his steady hand, kind heart, and remarkable work ethic. Whether lending a helping hand to a neighbor, fixing something in his workshop, or sharing stories with friends, he approached every day with warmth and generosity.
Bill’s passion for animals led him to a longtime involvement with the American Humane Society, where he instructed classes and served on the Red Star Team, deploying across the country to help establish emergency shelters during natural disasters and cruelty cases. His compassion and dedication brought comfort and safety to countless animals and their caregivers in times of crisis.
In his spare time, Bill found joy in life’s simple pleasures. His hobbies included hiking, fishing, camping, gardening, woodworking, and traveling anywhere at a moment’s notice. He was a devoted fan of KU basketball and the St. Louis Cardinals. Most mornings, he could be found sipping coffee on the porch, watching the birds, and petting a cat on his lap. Evenings often found him relaxing in front of the self-built fireplace he was so proud of, watching an old western.
He found great joy in spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren, who were the light of his life. To those who knew him best, Bill will be remembered for his gentle nature, his unwavering loyalty, and his quiet but steadfast love. He embodied kindness, humility, and a deep appreciation for the world around him.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Judy Grimes; their 3 children, Lori and her spouse Chuck, Joy and her spouse Sam, and Bill and his spouse Karol; 3 grandchildren, Ally, Caleb, and Kylee;1 great-grandchild, Taytum; his sister, Betty, and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Ida Grimes.
Condolences may be shared through cards or by making a donation to your local animal shelter in Bill’s name. He will be laid to rest in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Montana, where he chose to finish his amazing journey — surrounded by the mountains, nature, and beauty he so deeply loved.
Bill’s life was a testament to love, service, and compassion. His memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Obituary - Donald Johnson
In his free time, Don could be found on horseback, playing a guitar, hunting, working on vehicles and projects, and cheering on kids and grandkids at just about every sport and event you can imagine. The couple built their home in rural Humboldt in 1997 with the help of friends and family, and so many Monarch buddies who donated their time and talents to help each other. His grandkids were the highlight of his life, and he loved and snuggled every baby he saw. He was ornery, loved a good joke, and never met a stranger. He could also thoroughly cuss a horse that refused to get into the trailer, a cow that wouldn’t stay in the pasture, or a frozen water line in the dead of winter.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Frank Johnson, three sisters, Dorothy (Roy) Spillman, Betty (Lloyd) Spillman, and Lela Ann (Russ) Spillman.
Don is survived by his wife, Ann, of the home, sons Tom (Angela) Johnson and Tim (Kristy) Johnson, and daughter Kimberly (Craig) Baldwin, eight grandchildren, Jake Johnson, Allie (Devin) Gregg, Colby (Audrey) Johnson, Reid (Alex) Barnett, Cael (Libby) Johnson, Ava Baldwin, Annika Baldwin, Audrey Baldwin, and four great grandchildren, Kylinn, Tytin, Kyzer, and Charlotte, sister-in-law Bonnie Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews
Memorial service will be held 10:30 am Saturday, November 22, 2025 at the Schneider Funeral Home, Mound City Chapel. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 pm Friday, November 21 at the Mound City Chapel. Memorial contributions are suggested to Masonic Lodge Hebron #314.
Obituary - Kendra Cooper
Kendra was born July 5, 1959, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Donald Dee and Donna (Wehmeyer) Borum.
Kendra was a graduate of Sherwood Cass R-VIII and Central Missouri State University (UCM), obtaining a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in criminal justice.
Kendra spent her life dedicated to public service. She started her career as a Juvenile Officer for Cass County before becoming the first female patrol officer at the Belton Police Department in 1986 and again with the Pleasant Hill Police Department in 1994. Her trailblazing achievements paved the way for many other women in law enforcement who have since followed in her footsteps. Kendra moved to the Lee’s Summit Police Department in 1996, where she served in the patrol division, policy and procedure, and as a crime analyst before retiring in 2016. While at LSPD, she became a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician Instructor (CPSTI), serving on the Missouri CPS Advisory Committee with Safe Kids Worldwide, which she continued after her retirement. Not one to stay idle for long, she came out of retirement less than a month later, working as a corporate security officer with KCPL/Evergy before officially retiring in 2021.
Kendra was an avid horsewoman, and her love of horses was evident to anyone she ever met. In her youth, Kendra was active in the Creighton Saddle Club and participated in trail riding, parades, and rodeo events with her horses Lightning and Molly B. As an adult, Kendra was a member of the Peculiar Saddle Club and the Cass County Sheriff’s Posse in the 1990s, participating in trail riding, countless shows, and parades with her horses Joe and Lucy. In her later years, she transitioned from focusing on trail riding to reining, where she became an active member of the Southwest Missouri Reining Horse Association. Kendra competed in reining for many years with her faithful companion Milo by her side, winning many ribbons, buckles, and pewters. One of her greatest accomplishments was being invited to show at the AQHA World Show on her favorite horse, Vinny. She was well known among the reining community as a devoted supporter of the youth division and for volunteering wherever help was needed.
Kendra loved all things music. While she took formal lessons in piano, guitar, and flute, she preferred to play by ear. She participated in marching band in high school and played the flute for community events and weddings. She sang in the church choir and praise bands, most recently with the First Baptist Church of Peculiar.
