MSHP Reports Eight Traffic Fatalities Over Labor Counting Period
Colonel Michael A. Turner, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, provides the following preliminary statistics related to the Labor Day holiday:
Eight people died and 82 were injured in 213 traffic crashes during the 2026 Labor Day holiday counting period, which began at 6 p.m. Friday, September 4, 2026, and continued through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 7, 2026.

During the 2025 Labor Day holiday counting period the Patrol investigated 252 traffic crashes involving four fatalities and 123 injuries. Statewide, six people died and 423 were injured in 931 vehicle crashes in 2025. Nine boating crashes were investigated throughout Missouri in 2025.

Cass county man sentenced to 63 years on Statutory Sodomy charges
Caster was sentenced on three separate felony charges of Statutory Sodomy Or Attempted Statutory Sodomy - Deviate Sexual Intercourse - Person Less Than 12 Years Old.
On 12/10/23, deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office were asked to assist the Department of Family Services regarding a child victim in Freeman.
After an investigation by Cass County Detectives, incriminating evidence was presented to the judge, which helped lead to this sentencing.

Attention I-49 travelers: Mormon Fork bridge replacement to start October 1
The Northbound I-49 bridge over Mormon Fork creek will be closed beginning October 1, 2026. A median crossover will be in place to allow traffic to continue northbound, which will be reduced to one lane to allow both northbound and southbound traffic on the southbound bridge.
Plan on slowing down and using caution when traveling through the area. The northbound bridge will be closed for an undisclosed amount of time.

Bates County Commission signs proclamation in honor of Constitution Week
Pat Taylor (center, standing) presented a special proclamation to the Bates County Commission today regarding Constitution Week and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Impendence. Seen here, Presiding Commissioner Jim Wheatley dutifully signs the document.
Taylor, who hails from El Dorado Springs MO, is a living historian for the Harmony Mission Daughters of the American Revolution and will also be present this Thursday at 2:30 pm on the north side of the Bates County Courthouse for a special ceremony and the nationwide Ringing of the Bells which will be performed at 3 pm in honor of Constitution Week.
The public is invited to attend.
