National Farm Safety Week starts September 19th
The National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS) is dedicated to preventing illnesses, injuries, and deaths among farmers and ranchers, agricultural and horticultural workers, their families, and their employees. In 1997, NECAS opened on the Northeast Iowa Community College Peosta Campus. This is the only organization with hands-on farm equipment safety training center. The facility also houses classrooms and a library and resource center.
Our concern for safety in rural areas goes beyond farms and ranches. The need for services spreads from citrus groves in the South to vineyards in the West. It covers cattle ranches in Wyoming, fisheries in Maine, and thousands of ventures in between. Visit the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety web site here.

Special Report from the Bates County Sheriff's Office
On 9/6/10 Deputies of the Bates County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle registered to Billy Good of rural Adrian. Several items in the vehicle were found to be stolen from a burglary in Amsterdam.
On 9/7/10 information from the vehicle stop led the Sheriff’s Office to serve a search warrant in connection to multiple burglaries on the residence of Billy Good in rural Adrian. Officers recovered approximately $40,000 in stolen items and weapons. Good was taken into custody at the scene. Bates County was assisted by a member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
On 9/10/10 information from the search warrant led Deputies to a rural residence in the Butler area where Deputies took Bobby L Holman into custody. Holman was charged with receiving stolen property. Holman’s bond was set at $60,000 cash only.
On 9/13/10 Deputies served a search warrant at the residence of Bobby Holman at 106 S Main Butler. Deputies recovered items stolen from multiple burglaries and narcotics. During the search of the residence Deputies found a long cylinder item that had a digital meter and various wires coming out of the top. The top of the canister had electrical tape wrapped around it as if to hold the digital meter on. Photos of the suspicious item was taken and sent to the Kansas City Bomb Squad and the Lees Summit Bomb Squad. Neither Bomb Squad was able to identify the suspicious item and forwarded the picture to the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The Bomb Squad’s Commander advised the Bates County Sheriff’s Office to evacuate a 300 ft perimeter and hold the scene until they could arrive on scene. Additional Deputies, Officers from Butler Police Department and the Bates County Sheriff’s Posse were called to the scene to aid in the evacuation of the area. Lees Summit Police Bomb Squad arrived on scene and set up their command center. After a short debriefing they deployed a robot into the residence followed by two bomb squad technicians. Once on scene the bomb squad technicians confirmed that the item had been altered in a manner that led them to believe that it was an explosive device.
Members of the FBI and ATF agencies arrived on scene and believed the device to be a stereo capacitor designed to store power to car radios. The item is commonly used in vehicles with large and loud radios. The FBI and ATF agents agreed with the Bomb Squad that because the item was altered from its original manufactured state that it should be treated as a possible explosive device. The Bomb Squad neutralized the device using a high powered explosive disrupter. The item was then determined to be safe and was taken into evidence by the Bates County Sheriff’s Office. At approximately 11:30 pm residents were then allowed to return to their homes.
The Bates County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank local residents for their understanding of the situation. We recognized the inconvenience that residents suffer but these precautions are utilized so that we may err on the side of caution.
The investigation into these burglaries and multiple burglaries in the Northwest part of the County continues. The Sheriff’s Office expects there to be more charges filed in connection to the burglaries. We encourage that if you see any thing suspicious in your neighborhoods to call Law Enforcement. We also ask that if you have received items or know of anyone that has received items from these individuals to please contact Sheriff Chad Anderson or Chief Deputy Justin Moreland at the numbers below.
