Schedule for the Bates County BBQ Championship & Festival

The Bates County Fairgrounds will be buzzing most all weekend with a full schedule:

Friday, Oct 29th:
4:30 pm - Kick off event
4:30 to 7 pm - Entertainment by the Immanuel Baptist Church
5 pm - Set up for the 7th annual chili cook off sponsored by the Butler Area Ladies Ministries.
5 pm - Art show opens sponsored by the Fine Arts League of Bates County
5 pm - Vendors and craft booths open
5 pm to 9 pm - Butler Police Association selling McBee's Brats
6 pm - Jack-O-Lantern contest turn in
6:45 pm - Begin counting votes for chili cook off
7 pm - Deadine to turn in Salsa, Sauce, Sausage and BBQ baked beans (open to anyone)
7:30 to 12 am - Live music by Tracy Allison & The Drive on stage
8 pm - Cooks meeting at the Youth Building
12 am - Quiet time!

Saturday, Oct 30th:
6 to 9 am - Breakfast at Fair building
8 am - Vendor and craft booths open
8 am - Art Show opens
9 am - Meet the BBQ teams
9 am - Relay for Life 5K run begins
10 am - Pie Contest turn in

Ike Skelton and Robin Carnahan to be in Butler Saturday

Bates County Live has been informed that District 4 representative Ike Skelton will be in Butler at the Senior Center, then making an appearance at the Bates County Fairgrounds around noon on Saturday. Likewise, Senate hopeful Robin Carnahan is slated to appear at the Fairgrounds around 2 pm.

The Bates County Fairgrounds will be quite busy this weekend- the Butler Police Association State BBQ Championship, the chili cook-off and many other activities are taking place starting Friday evening. See the next story (above) for a full list of events.

Obituary - Dean Bolser

Funeral services for Dean Bolser will be 2 p.m. Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri with David Hackett officiating. Visitation will be prior to services from 1-2 p.m. at Schowengerdt Chapel. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Contributions to Harvesters Community Food Network.

Harold Dean Bolser, age 87 of Lake Lotawana, Missouri died Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Wilshire at Lakewood in Lee's Summit, Missouri. He was born November 16, 1922 to Vernon Allen and Edith Workman Bolser in Rich Hill, Missouri.


Dean is survived by his wife, Elsie Marie Bolser of Lake Lotawana, Missouri; one daughter, Karen Dudley and husband Charles of Blue Springs, Missouri; two brothers, Larry Bolser and wife "Tootie" of Lake Pomme de Terre, Missouri and Jerry Bolser and wife Donna of Nevada, Missouri; one sister, Audrey Miller of Butler, Missouri; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Update on accident near Amsterdam

Rodney R. Robison, 49, of Cottonwood Falls KS received minor injuries when his eastbound 2010 Kenworth traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a signpost, returned to the roadway and overturned. The accident happened on J Highway, just east of the Kansas state line. Robison was taken to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

First annual Adrian Christmas parade Nov. 27th

The first ever Adrian Christmas parade is slated for November 27th and turnout is expected to be good as it will be in conjunction with the lighting ceremony at Frontier Village. The parade will line up at the VFW hall on west Main street and depart eastward around 4:30 pm. Get your floats ready for judging; the first annual Adrian Christmas Parade is sponsored by the Adrian Chamber of Commerce. For more info, call the chamber at 816-297-0004.

Accident west of Amsterdam blocks roadway

1:20 pm - Bates County EMS and Amsterdam Fire were dispatched to the scene of an accident involving a truck that lost control and came to a rest on its side, blocking the roadway. The driver has been reported to have minor injuries and was out of the vehicle walking around when first responders arrived. The accident happened on J Highway, west of Amsterdam near State Line.

Obituary - Leroy Beckham

Leroy’s wishes were to donate his body to K.U. Medical Center for research. Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. Visitation will be prior to services from 1:30 - 3 p.m. at Schowengerdt Chapel. Amos Leroy Beckham, age 95 of Butler, Missouri passed away Thursday, October 21, 2010 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. He was born October 10, 1915, outside of Butler to Joe and Minnie (Hancock) Beckham. The family moved to town when he was 10 years old. He graduated from Butler High School in 1932. He was united in marriage to Maxine Ingram on July 18, 1937.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Maxine; daughters, Glenda McClain of St. Louis, Missouri, and Kim (Bill) Clements of Prince George, Virginia; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Beckham of Independence, Missouri; grandchildren, Shannon (Jeff) Martin and Sharron (Cal) Closson of Blue Springs, Missouri, Scott (Jacqueline) McClain of St. Louis, Missouri, Vicki (Matt) Benson of Overland Park, Kansas, Jeff Beckham of Olathe, Kansas, William (Rachel) Clements and Robert Clements of Prince George, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Clay, Hilary and Aidan Martin, Erik and Lynley Closson, Carley, Kirby and Nathan McClain, Abby and Emily Benson and nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lawrence and Wayne; son, Victor; and son-in-law, A.D. McClain.
