Possible tree trimming scam

Bates County Live has received several reports that individuals are going door to door in Butler offering tree trimming and asphalt services- but in some cases may have not completed the work as agreed with previous customers. Bear in mind that the city of Butler requires a permit for anyone doing door to door solicitations. Here are some other tips to avoid being scammed:

1. Ask to see their permit. If they don't have one, turn them away.
2. If they have a permit, ask for local references that you may contact.
3. Do not sign or agree to anything before you are satisfied that all references are good.
4. Never pay for any work before the job is completed to your satisfaction. A legitimate contractor will never ask you for a down payment or a credit card number in advance.

Above all, call the police if you have concerns about the individuals or if they do not have a permit.

Remember, scammers prey on those who are trusting. Just trust your instincts- they won't let you down.
