No burn permits as of today...

Effective today, the Butler Fire Department will issue no more burning permits due to extremely hot and dry conditions.

No more permits will be issued until sufficient rainfall is received.

Any current burning permits are cancelled.

Change of venue hearing for Raymond Harvey today

Raymond Harvey
Raymond Samuel Harvey is set to appear in the Bates County Circuit Court today at 1 p.m. The court appearance will be for a change of venue.

Harvey, 38, is charged in connection with the murders of Brandee and Bailey Bickleman of Butler on March 9th.

Tractor accident east of Adrian this evening

Around 8:30 p.m. the Adrian Fire Department and Bates County EMS were dispatched to the scene of an accident where reportedly a person was run over by a tractor at a residence just north of KK highway.

A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene to transport the individual to a Kansas City hospital. No further details are available at this time.

Visitation, 5 - 7 p.m. Monday, July 18 at the Schowengerdt Chapel. Burial, Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Contributions may be made to the family.

Howard Lee McElwain, age 67 of Garden City, Missouri formerly of Ballard, Missouri died July 15, 2011 at his home in Garden City. He was born February 5, 1944 to Ellis Leroy and Virginia Fern Bitner McElwain in Bates County, Missouri.


Howard is survived by his wife, Sharon McElwain of Garden City, Missouri; two sons, Hank Hubbard and wife Debbie of Adrian, Missouri and Morrie McElwain and wife Terri of Garden City Missouri; two daughters, Tina Hansen and husband Mike of Grain Valley, Missouri and Amanda Nickerson and husband Clint of Harrisonville, Missouri; three brothers, Glen McElwain and wife Linda of Butler, Missouri Vern McElwain and wife Barbara of Adrian, Missouri and Bill McElwain and wife Sharon of Butler, Missouri; two sisters, Jean Chistopher and husband Joe of Butler, Missouri and Connie Eidson and husband Danny of Urich, Missouri;12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren and 6 step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Perry Franklin "Frank" Fritts, age 90 of Butler, Missouri died Friday, July 15, 2011 at The Maples Senior Living in Butler. He was born August 6, 1920 to John Wesley and Edna LaFollette Fritts in Amsterdam Missouri.

Frank is survived by six grandchildren, Brian Harrel and wife Ilene of Howe, Idaho, Sherri Haralson of Arco, Idaho, Sandi Drussell and husband Kirk of Howe, Idaho, Jim Fritts and wife Selina and Misty Fuqua both of Butler, Missouri and Josh Fritts and wife Cassie of Amsterdam, Missouri; and a daughter-in-law, Shirley Fritts of Amsterdam, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his wife Leona Fritts; two sons, Jim and Daryl Fritts; a daughter, Carolyn Shelton; and two sisters, Ruby Jeffrey/Sample and Flossie Lankford McDonald.
