Boil Water Advisory Issued for the City of Fort Scott Kansas

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the public water supply located in the City of Fort Scott in Bourbon County. 

The advisory affects the area north of 21st Street. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the system. 

Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

The advisory took effect on May 26, 2017 and will remain in effect until conditions which place the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be adequately resolved.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation, or use bottled water.
• Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
• Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
• Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.
• If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Adrian Optimist Club Students of the Month

The Adrian Optimist Club is pleased to honor Students of the Month from the Miami, Ballard, and Adrian schools. Criteria for this honor center on outstanding academic and civic achievement and school spirit. Staff at each of the schools make the selection, and their decision is based on expansion of these criteria. Selection is based on the criteria, but a student stepping up to a particular task will come to play in it. Each student is honored with a certificate of recognition from the Adrian Optimist Club and $20.00 in Adrian Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Bucks”.

The Adrian Student of the Month for May is, junior Trenton Bagby, son of Scott and Megan Bagby. Trenton’s in school activities include FFA as President and member of FBLA. Outside of school Trenton enjoys showing pigs as well as fishing and hunting. Adrian Vocational Agriculture Teacher, Ethan Romi states “Trenton has gone above and beyond for the Adrian FFA Chapter. He will do anything that is asked of him.” After graduation, Trenton plans on going to college to judge livestock and become a large animal vet.

The Ballard Student of the Month is senior, Morgan Meade, daughter of Jeremiah and CeNedra Meade. Vicki Lybarger, Music Teacher, states “Morgan is one of the most enjoyable students I have had inclass. She is eager to learn everything I know and comes back the next day asking for more. She is self-motivated and practices her instrument more than any student I have had the opportunity to work with; in turn she is growing as a musician by leaps and bounds. She doesn’t stop with what I can teach her she seeks out others who can help her to grow as well. This is the ear mark of a life time learner. These are the people who realize that even the so called “virtuoso” knows they can still learn something. Perhaps from an older “virtuoso” or even a new young instrumentalist (or vocalist) coming on the scene. 

Keep learning in all areas of your life Morgan and as Spick would say, “Live long, and prosper.” God Bless and keep you always.” Raelynn Kershner, Math Teacher, states “Morgan has a kind heart and lots of creative ideas!” Tori Decombes, Art Teacher, states “We could say a lot about Morgan’s intelligence, work ethic, and potential, but ultimately, Morgan Meade’s greatest contribution to this school has always been her one-of-a-kind personality. She will be greatly missed.” Morgan is involved in Publications, Scholar Bowl, Ballard Honor Society, Drama Club, and Pep Club.

The Miami Student of the Month is senior, Madison Talley, daughter of JD and Pam Talley. Morgan’s activities include basketball, softball, volleyball, FCCLA, FBLA, and FFA. She also works after school as well as playing softball and basketball. Madison states “Don’t stress over little stuff.” Miami staff states “She possesses leadership skills that will only become more evident as she matures. A great person to be around. Madison’s plans include two years at Crowder College.

Drexel Lions Club looking for food vendors

The Drexel Lions Club is looking for food vendors for the 4th of July festival. 

The Festivities begin at 4 PM and continue until the fireworks begin at dark.

Update: Police still searching for man who fled on foot this morning

On May 26, 2017 Bates County Sheriff’s Office was involved in a pursuit. 

The subject is identified as Jason Gillis (DOB 4/19/1985) from Adrian, MO, fled on foot from Deputies. Gillis is wanted on several outstanding warrants for receiving stolen property and failure to appear on traffic charges. 

The total bonds for these warrants are $11000.00. Gillis will be facing additional charges for today’s pursuit.

There was one female in the vehicle that Gillis was driving that was arrested and placed on a 24 hour investigative hold.

Police Chase ends in rural Butler

Around 9:30am this morning a Bates County Sheriff's Deputy with assistance of the Missouri State Highway Patrol attempted to pull over a black Chevrolet truck around the area of Fulton and Harrison Streets in Butler.

The vehicle failed to yield for the officer and a pursuit ensued traveling out North Main street with speeds reaching 60mph.

The chase eventually was ended when two subjects fled from the vehicle on foot around the area of CR7003 and CR6004 in rural Bates County. One subject is in custody at this time and one subject is still on foot in the area just South of D Highway.

Belton woman escapes injury after striking deer in Cass County

On 5/25/17 around  9:00pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cass County responded to a one vehicle accident on Route D just South of 155th Street in rural Cass County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2010 Toyota 4-Runner driven by 45 year old Jennifer M. Huffman of Belton, Missouri struck a deer in the roadway.

Jennifer M. Huffman sustained minor injuries in this accident but she refused medical treatment at the scene.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene by Eckert's Tow.
