Teenage Boy Rescued from Grain Bin Entrapment in Clinton

At 9:07 AM on Monday, January 29th, Clinton officials responded to an emergency call for a 16-year-old boy entrapped in a grain bin at Hankins Grain Company in Clinton. The young man, whose identity as a juvenile remains anonymous, was trapped in corn up to his chest and was unable to free himself, although he was conscious and alert.

Emergency responders from Clinton Police and Fire Departments, as well as Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare EMS, responded to the scene, with LifeFlight Eagle helicopter on standby at GVMH in case of need.

Clinton Fire Department Chief Mark Manuel reported that employees of Hankins Grain Company were “cleaning some grain out of the bin. There was a pocket, a void space in the grain that some wet grain crated. When they broke that loose, it sucked the victim down into the grain and buried him to the chest. They immediately called 911.”

Using the department’s aerial ladder truck, Clinton Fire Department was able to access the top of the grain bin and remove part of the roof with a saw, from which opening they were able to access the entrapped young man inside. Securing the young man with a rope to prevent further sinking, responders worked to install barriers against the greater weight of the corn in the bin and safely remove a sufficient quantity of grain in order to free him.

Chief Manuel reported that rescuers used a device called a “Great Wall of Rescue,” is “created just for situations like this, grain entrapment.” Chief Manuel further describes the device as consisting of “several wall pieces that [rescuers] can use and push down into the grain…Once we get it completely deployed, it completely encapsulates [the] victim and prevents any more grain from falling down onto them to bury them any further.” Once the Great Wall of Rescue was fully deployed and encapsulated the entrapped young man, firefighters were able to use an auger to remove grain from around the young man and free him at approximately 12:00 noon.

Despite being entrapped for nearly three hours while crews worked to rescue him safely, the young man emerged “in good condition” and “stable.” Manuel elaborated that “when [firefighters] removed him, he was talking to [rescuers] and in good spirits and able to walk on his own.” The young man was transported by ambulance to Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare for further evaluation.

Grain entrapment is a serious health and safety risk that can in many cases prove to be fatal. Entrapment can occur within seconds, and the friction and pressure of the entrapping makes extraction of the entrapped victim difficult, even for trained rescue professionals.

Obituary - Thomas Ray Toland

Thomas Ray Toland, age 70, Nevada, MO, went to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 28. He was preceded in death by his parents, O. D. Toland and Jean McCaskill Toland, a nephew, Danny Toland, parents-in-law, Marvil Hill and Calverine McLaughlin Hill, and brother-in-law, Jerry Smith.

Ray was born on May 25, 1953, and was raised in Camden, Arkansas, where he graduated from Camden High School in 1973. He then attended Oil Belt Vocational Technical School in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where he obtained his Mechanical Drafting and Basic Architectural Drafting certificates.

While working as a draftsman for Uncle Ben’s Rice in Greenville, Mississippi, Ray met and would later marry his wife of 42 years, Rebecca (Becky) Hill Toland. Ray left drafting when offered a crew dispatch position for Security Barge Line (later Flowers Transportation) where he worked for several years. Ray and family then moved to Arkansas where they owned Saffell Grocery, Lynn Supermarket and Mini-Storage and Dollar Alley. During that time, he also worked at Lake Charles State Park in maintenance. After retiring Ray moved to Nevada, MO, where he drove a bus for the Nevada R5 School District.

Ray will be lovingly remembered for his quick whit and dry sense of humor. He was a gentle giant, a faithful friend, and strong protector of those he loved. Ray found pleasure and peace in nature, and the sound of a wild canary. Memories of hunting, fishing, and camping with his dad, uncles, children, and friends made him smile. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of guns and ammo.

Ray was a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Those left to cherish his memory are Christopher Toland (Malorie) of Floral, AR, Matthew Toland and Haley Toland of Nevada, MO, Hanna Toland of Neosho, MO, Tyler Toland of Batesville, AR, Bayleigh and Ryleigh Toland of Tulsa, OK, Adalynn Toland, Malia Shaffer, Jayden Blansfield, Zoie Edwards of Nevada, MO, and Allie Toland of Floral, AR., Lynn Smith of Conway, AR, Travis Toland (Angel) of Royal, AR, and many nieces and nephews. Ray made an impact on the lives of those around him and will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

The family wishes to express appreciation to doctors and nurses of Freeman West hospital in Joplin who fought hard to extend his life.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at Moore Cemetery in Nevada with Rev. Jeff Dial officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Obituary - Gary Michael (Mike) Renek

Gary Michael (Mike) Renek of Harrisonville, Missouri passed away at Cass Regional Medical Center, on January 22, 2024 after a long battle with metastatic colon and liver cancer. Mike requested cremation and that no funeral service take place.

Gary Michael Renek was born on February 10, 1935, in St. Paul, Minnesota to Jeanne Ressler and Robert Johnston. Mike was legally adopted in 1953 by Sam Renek. Mike served in the United States Air Force as a Basic Airman from 1953 to 1957 at Whiteman Force Base. Mike married Julia Anne Everett on August 9, 1957. They remained married until Julia’s death on August 2, 2014.

Mike graduated from High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended classes and earned the equivalent of an associate degree prior to working for Bayer Corporation in 1968 in supplies and transportation logistics until he retired in 1990. They moved to Harrisonville to fulfill the dream of having their own fishing lake and a few acres. Mike and Julie took a trip to South America and floated down the Amazon River as well as traveling to Alaska to explore the glaciers.

Mike was best known for his sense of humor and ability to entertain his friends and family. He and Julie loved to host events at their home and spend time with their special group of friends known originally as the “At the Crest” gang, becoming the “Over The Hill” gang.” Mike valued his friends and family very much and they were always the center of his life.

Hobbies and Personal Interests: Mike’s love for reading started at an early age with Shakespeare in third grade. Once he found an author he liked, he read every book written by him or her. He also enjoyed creative writing including poetry and short stories. His favorite hobby was fishing and he taught his children, their spouses and grandchildren how to fish. There was nothing that could stop him from fishing, including cancer.

Mike enjoyed watching sports and was an avid Chiefs fan. Sundays were football days and his daughters learned football at a young age. He spent many hours crafting his fantasy football league team and preparing for the annual draft.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanne Renek, his father, Sam Renek, and his brother, Robert Johnston. Mike is survived by three children; Deborah A. Renek (Independence), Diana Renek-Hallerud (Kansas City), and Dawn J Renek (Harrisonville) and two son-in-laws; Reed Moorman (Independence) and Eric W. Hallerud (Kansas City). He has four grandchildren; Benjamin M. Warner (Sydney, Australia), J. Ryan Warner (Lincoln), Kiel C. Hallerud (Kearney) and Lauren C. Hallerud (Chicago). He is survived by three great-grandchildren: Faith A. Warner, Ethan R. Warner, Marissa I. Hallerud and preceded in death by Allison C. Hallerud on December 1, 2011.

Contributions may be made to Cass Regional Medical Center Foundation - Oncology, contributions may be mailed to Dickey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 432, Harrisonville, Missouri 64701.
