BCSO announces passing of K-9 Lector

The Bates County Sheriff's Office is sad to announce the passing of retired K9 Lector. K9 Lector served the Bates County Citizens with honor and integrity. K9 Lector remained with his handler after retirement until his passing yesterday at their home. K9 Lector holds the Office’s K9 record for most suspect apprehensions and removed countless dangerous drugs off the streets.
During his career, Lector even attempted to apprehend the Sheriff in the office after he escaped his kennel in the hallway. Thankfully his handler was able to intervene just feet from the apprehension. K9 Lector had a great personality and left an impression on everyone he encountered or apprehended. He adapted well to his retirement and became the boss of the house.
Our prayers go out for his handler and family he lived with to the end.

Details released regarding fatal motorcycle crash

On March 29, 2026, at approximately 7:32 PM, the Miami County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting an injury accident on Plum Creek Road (K-7) south of US-169 Highway. Initial reports indicated that a pickup truck and a motorcycle were involved in the crash.
Emergency personnel from Miami County EMS, the Osawatomie Fire Department, the Osawatomie Police Department, and the Miami County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they located a male individual, believed to be the motorcycle driver, in the roadway with severe injuries. The driver and passenger of the pickup truck did not appear to be injured.
Due to the severity of the crash, the Traffic Homicide Unit (THU) was requested to respond. The roadway was shut down for an extended period while the investigation was conducted.
Preliminary investigation determined that a 2009 Harley-Davidson FLHX, driven by Andrew W. Miles, 36, of Fort Scott, Kansas, was traveling southbound on Plum Creek Road near 371st Street. A 2013 Ram 2500 pickup, driven by Cooper J. Sloan, 19, of Mound City, Kansas, was traveling northbound on Plum Creek Road.
As the Ram pickup crested a hill, the Harley-Davidson motorcycle was in the Ram pickups lane of travel. The Harley-Davidson motorcycle struck the Ram pickup head-on, causing Andrew Miles to be ejected from the motorcycle.
Andrew Miles was transported to a local hospital and, despite efforts to save his life, succumbed to his injuries on April 2, 2026. Cooper Sloan and his passenger, Qwintin B. Fanning, 19, of Osawatomie, Kansas, were not injured in the crash.
The Miami County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincerest sympathies to Andrew’s family and loved ones, as well as to Cooper Sloan and Qwintin Fanning. This tragic crash will have a lasting impact on many individuals.
The case remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit. At this time, no charges are being filed in connection with this crash.
