Obituary - George Toney

George Toney, January 4, 1942 – May 17, 2026, our hero, left this world at age 84 to be reunited with our Lord.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lida; father, Robert; sisters, Lori, Virginia, and Hilda; a brother, Robert; wife of 40 years, Mary; and his baby angel, Teresa.

He leaves behind daughters, Mary and Sarah; grandchildren, Courtney and Christopher; and many friends and other extended family.

In remembering George, we know a loving, protective husband and father who worked hard to provide for everyone around him. He loved fishing and going morel hunting, was a good card player, and an honest man who loved God and Star Trek.

You will be forever missed. We will love you always, until we meet again.

Domestic call results in fleeing subject, arrest made in Bates county

This morning, Nevada Police were dispatched to a hotel in the 2400 block of Marvel St. regarding a domestic assault that possibly involved a firearm. Officers responded to the area and observed what appeared to be a confrontation occurring in the parking lot.
As officers began arriving on scene, the alleged suspect entered a black Chevy Silverado and attempted to leave the location. Nevada Police attempted to stop the vehicle, however the driver failed to yield, initiating a pursuit.
The driver fled northbound on I-49, where Nevada Police, and Vernon County Deputies continued the pursuit. The pursuit eventually entered Bates County, where Bates County Deputies successfully deployed stop sticks on the interstate just south of Butler and near Highway 52, ultimately disabling the vehicle.
The suspect came to a stop in the middle of the interstate, where law enforcement officers safely took the driver into custody. Further investigation revealed the driver had warrants for his arrest in multiple jurisdictions in both Missouri and Kansas.
The driver has been identified as 35 year old, Christopher Beverley, of Joplin, Missouri. The Vernon County Prosecuting Attorney has filed the following criminal charges against Beverly: Domestic Assault 2nd Degree, Class D Felony, Resisting Arrest - Creating Substantial Risk, Class E Felony, Exceeded Posted Speed Limit, Class C Misdemeanor, Fail to Stop for Steady Red Signal, Class C Misdemeanor. His Bond was set at $25,000 cash only. Beverley is currently being held in the Bates County Jail.
This incident is another excellent example of multiple law enforcement agencies working together to help keep our communities safe. We would like to give thanks to the Bates County Sheriff's Office & Vernon County Sheriff's Office for the assistance in this investigation.
