Important from the city of Harrisonville

POWER OUTAGE ANNOUNCEMENT: As we approach sunset on the second day of this power outage, we have an announcement we want you to know about.

After working since the storms first rolled through, around 1 p.m. on Saturday, the decision has been made to send our Electric crew home to get a night of sleep.

The crews will work until dark and then will go home. They will resume their work first thing Monday morning.

We understand that at this point there are a few dozen without power and we know this is not the news you were hoping to hear. But, we do also need to be mindful of the safety of our staff, to ensure a difficult situation does not become a tragic one.

For those with questions about what work still remains, crews have been working to restore power to individual homes or small groupings of homes (2-6 houses). A majority of the challenges are large trees that have fallen onto power lines or have knocked down power poles. Crews in the field say Saturday’s storm created more tree damage than any storm they have worked during their time in Harrisonville.

We appreciate the patience and support of our entire community in the wake of this storm. Our crews are committed to the people of Harrisonville and will be back to finish their work first thing Monday morning.

The MU Extension Office in Butler celebrated Ramon Arancibia’s retirement as our horticulture specialist on July 1st. We were so happy to be able to share his last day with his family. We’ll miss you, Ramon!

Obituary - Charles Wayne Nichol

Charles Wayne Nichol, age 66, Fort Scott, Kansas passed away May 29, 2026.  He was born on January 20, 1960 in Moline, Illinois the son of Thomas and Carol Thompson Nichol.  He proudly served his country in the United States Navy.  He was a proud member of the Hope Chapel.  He wrote poetry and loved to read his bible.

Obituary - Dixie Arlene Boone

Dixie Arlene Boone, age 77, La Cygne, Kansas passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, July 1st, 2026, of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). From the beginning of her diagnosis all the way to the end of her life she fought with dignity, pride, strength, and a will to live that was unmatched. ALS took many things, but one thing is for sure, it never took her spirit. Dixie was born on September 16, 1948, in La Cygne, Kansas, the daughter of Paul and Edith Elizabeth Cohee Ross. LaCygne is where she would spend all 77 years of her life. Growing up, graduating from LaCygne High School, working, and raising her family. Dixie was united in marriage to Jerry Boone in Kansas City, Kansason July 10th, 1965. They would spend 51 years together till his death on October 15th, 2016.  As a young girl Dixie worked for the LaCygne Journal running the printing press and mowed many yards. She worked for Ross’s Bus Service for many years and cleaned houses on the side most of her life. Dixie and Jerry opened the Family Café in 1991 and that’s where she would continue to work up until her ALS diagnosis in the spring of 2025.  Dixie wore many hats. Mother, Grandmother, wife, sister, friend, homemaker, caretaker, cook, and everyone’s “go to” for life lessons are just a few. Her passion was taking care of her very large family. She also enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, dancing, having drinks, watching her kids and grandkids compete in their sports, watching the Kansas City Chiefs, and rooting for the Kansas Jayhawk basketball team. She leaves behind a legacy not measured in years, but in the countless lives she impacted with her generosity, strength, and heart that will be felt for generations to come. An extraordinary woman with the upmost epitome of strength and love. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, a son, Luke Allan Boone, and two brothers, Herb Pemberton, and Dickie Ross. Dixie is survived by three sons, Patrick Boone (Judy), Jerry Paul Boone, and Richard Boone (Laurie), four daughters, Tammy Weitman (Danny), Juley Isenhower (J.J.), Lisa Elmore (David), and Tiffany VanNorman, two brothers, Larry Ross and Kenneth Ross, two sister in-laws Kay Ross and BarbaraPemberton-Nunnemacher, 29 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. In honor of Dixie wear a KU shirt or royal blue shirt to her services. Rock Chalk Jayhawk, Go KU!! 

Memorial service will be 10 am Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at the La Cygne Christian Church. Inurnment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, La Cygne. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm Tuesday, July 7, at the Schneider Funeral Home, La Cygne Chapel. Memorial contributions are suggested to Shriner Children's Hospital or Dixie Boone Memorial. Obituary - Peggy Lou Oehlert

Peggy Lou Oehlert, 63, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. She was born on April 18, 1963, in Kansas City, Kansas, the youngest of six children born to Bud and Lola Oehlert of Stilwell Kansas.

In 1982, she graduated from Blue Valley High School before embarking on a career path that saw her work various jobs until she finally found her dream employment at a local quilting factory in Branson, Missouri—a fitting place for someone who loved working with her hands.

Peggy was known far and wide as an avid crafter and a deeply caring friend. Those who knew her remember her generosity—she would give the shirt off her back for anyone in need—and her tireless work ethic, willing to work until her words her “feet were pounding”. Her passion for crafting brought joy to countless people, and her friendship enriched everyone lucky enough to know her.

Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Lola Oehlert; her sisters Brenda, Ann, and Karen; and the father of her children, Tom Johnston, among other beloved family members.

She leaves behind a loving family including three children: Alex Johnston (Josh) of Kansas City, Missouri; Connie McCullough (Tim) of Overland Park, Kansas; and Clark Bicknell of Kansas City, Missouri; brother Kenny Oehlert (Denise) of Louisburg, Kansas; sister Terry Johns of Durango, Colorado; granddaughter Nora Johnston; and many devoted nieces and nephews whose lives she touched.

Service arrangements are being planned and will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring Peggy's memory by donating to KU Hospice House or your local cancer research facility.

Harold Lee Davis, 90, of Freeman, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at his home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO, with the visitation beginning at 1:00 PM. Masonic services will be held before the services at 1:45 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to MO Masonic Home.

Obituary - Glenna Lee Stackhouse

Glenna Lee Stackhouse, 90, of Archie, Missouri, peacefully departed this life on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at her home. In honor of Glenna's life, visitation will be held at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 9, 2026, also at Atkinson Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Freeman Cemetery in Freeman, MO.

Update on activities in Rich Hill today

AS OF RIGHT NOW, EVERYTHING IS PROCEEDING ON SCHEDULE!

Registration for the parade is starting at 1:45 p.m., as scheduled.

The parade will start at 3 p.m., as scheduled.

The only change, so far, is that the Pickleball tournament has been moved to 4 p.m.
