Arthur (Art) G. Schlumpberger (89) passed peacefully on September 23, 2026, at his home in Harrisonville, Missouri.
Art was born on January 5, 1937, in Monroe, South Dakota, to Frank and Olive (Wintrode) Schlumpberger.
Art graduated from Parkston, South Dakota, High School in 1955. He received a scholastic scholarship from South Dakota State University but decided to join the Naval Reserve. Art served two years of active duty as a radarman.
After serving in the Navy, he pursued an education in computer science but found that working with his hands brought him greater joy. He stayed in Parkston, South Dakota, and began a career in home building.
On April 18, 1959, Art married Joan E. (Sudbeck) at Sacred Heart Parish in Parkston, South Dakota. Art and Joan celebrated 67 years of marriage this year.
In 1960, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he worked for Massman Construction Co. as a commercial carpenter.
He worked for Massman Construction Co. building the new college campus of Avila University. Upon completion of the building of Avila University, President Sr. Olive Louise offered him the position of Director of Buildings and Grounds. Art accepted this position and continued taking correspondence courses as they pertained to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and anything needed to perform his job well. Art was a pursuer of knowledge and continued to be so until his very last day.
In 1999, a new maintenance building was constructed on the Avila University campus in honor of Art’s 35 years of dedicated service and was named The Schlumpberger Facility.
He was very involved with the Knights of Columbus, serving as a council member of the O’Hara Council #4387. He participated in many construction projects for the council and his church, Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in South Kansas City, Missouri.
There wasn’t much that Art couldn’t fix, and he was constantly being called upon to do so. His talents were unlimited and will be greatly missed.
After moving to Harrisonville, the couple enjoyed spending time with friends, dancing at venues surrounding their community, working out and playing cards at the community center, and serving at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Art also enjoyed playing golf, and he never ran out of good jokes.
Art Schlumpberger went to meet his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in Harrisonville, Missouri, at the age of 89.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; his children, Brenda Honeycutt of Oak Grove, Missouri, Natalie (Allen) Belcher of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jeff (Kristin) Schlumpberger of Liberty, Missouri, Greg (Susan) Schlumpberger of South Jordan, Utah, and Julie (Eric) Neill of Freeman, Missouri; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one brother, Francis (Mary) Schlumpberger of Rapid City, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Tiffane; great-grandson, Dylan; three sisters, Joan, Anita, and Rita; and three brothers, LeRoy, Dennis, and Bernard.
A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, September 28, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Harrisonville, Missouri. The Rosary will begin at 9:30 a.m., with visitation to follow until Funeral Mass.
Graveside with Military Service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Raytown, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to the Harrisonville Community Center, and sent in care to Dickey Funeral Home P.O. Box 432 Harrisonville, Missouri 64701.
