Unwanted drug take back coming to Nevada October 24th

On Saturday October 24th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Nevada Police Department in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.
Bring your prescription drugs for disposal to the Nevada Police Department at 120 S. Ash Street in Nevada. Police personnel and volunteers will be stationed in the lobby for a convenient drive up and drop off option. Prescription drugs can also be dropped off at the permanent drop box in the lobby of the Nevada Police Department during regular business hours. These services are free and anonymous, no questions asked.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows year after year that the majority of misused and abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including someone else’s medication being stolen from the home medicine cabinet.
For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the October 24th Take Back Day event, contact Lieutenant Williamson at the Nevada Police Department at 417-448-5100.

Ellett Memorial recognizes Matthew Desbien

Please join us in wishing a very Happy Respiratory Care Week to Ellett Respiratory Therapists: Matt Desbien, Robert Marez, and Michael Nilbert
A respiratory therapist (RT) helps diagnose, treat and manage conditions that affect your lungs. They perform tests and evaluations, manage ventilators, administer oxygen and medication, and work alongside physicians and other healthcare providers to develop treatment plans to help restore or maintain lung and breathing function. They are an often overlooked, but nonetheless essential part of a patient's care team.
This Respiratory Care Week we also wanted to take a moment to spotlight Rural Sleep Solutions, who we partner with to provide our patients with in-hospital and at-home sleep studies. Thank you for partnering with us to help us provide diagnostic Sleep Studies to our rural community!

Nevada tire shop fire update

The Nevada Fire Department and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) continue to actively monitor the ongoing situation at David's Tire. We understand the community's concerns regarding the continued smoke and smell from burning tires.
The business owners are working directly under the guidance and recommendations of state regulatory agencies to suppress the fire. Due to the large volume of tires in the initial pile, complete extinguishment and proper disposal will take time.
Nevada Fire crews will re-evaluate the site next week to determine if additional water application is necessary for further suppression. We appreciate the community’s continued patience as crews and agencies work safely toward full resolution.

Cornland Special Road District tops in Commission discussions

Minutes from the October 7, 2026 Bates County Commission meeting
The Bates County Commission met with Presiding Commissioner Jim Wheatley, Northern Commissioner John Gray and Southern Commissioner Trent Nelson present.
Chris Gach was present for all meetings.
Layne Anderson, with Cornland Special Road District, came in and presented a recommendation letter to the Commission for Mark Heckadon and Alex Little to be appointed to the vacant seats on the Township Board. John felt there was no issue with appointing them but stated he was leaving that up to Trent, as this was his district. John also stated that the Commission would need a little more information for them to be able to create their letters of appointment.
Trent made a motion to accept Mark Heckadon and Alex Little to fill the vacancies on Cornland Special Road District Board. John seconded the motion. All were in favor. Motion carried. No opposition.
Layne told the Commissioners that they have found a road grader to use and David Schapeler is the one operating it part time. Trent spoke over David’s capabilities, and the experience David has, reassuring Layne that David will do a wonderful job on getting the roads fixed and recovering gravel from ditches.
Layne informed the Commission of the website that he has created. The website contains important information about the township and is where you can find a text alert number that keeps the residents in the township up to date on meetings or road closures due to bad weather, etc. Layne went on to tell them about the QR Code that he has placed at the end of the roads for easy access to the website and alert number. The number has the capability to receive text messages from anyone to report issues. That text will then be sent onto the Commissioners of the township to notify them of the issue. Jim asked Layne to put this into a document that can be shared with other Townships. John thought it would be beneficial for all townships.
Jim asked Layne about their financials. Layne explained that he is confident that money won’t be an issue and the money they do have will continue to be spent on the roads and things that the township needs. Jim reminded him about the road groomers that Road and Bridge have that keeps the roads kept once they reach the maintenance period.
The Commission then thanked Layne for everything he has done since joining the Township Board.
