MDC offers more information on Chronic Wasting Disease in deer
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a contagious, deadly brain disease of white-tailed deer and other members of the deer family, called cervids. The disease is caused by a misfolded protein and can be spread by direct contact between deer, when deer encounter the carcass of an infected deer, or when deer encounter the misfolded proteins shed in the environment (urine, feces, saliva) by an infected deer. Learn more about prussic acid poisoning
Recent rains may have greened up pastures, but they can also increase the risk of prussic acid poisoning in cattle and horses. Young regrowth of Johnsongrass and other sorghum species may contain dangerous levels of compounds that release prussic acid, especially after periods of drought followed by rainfall.
MU Extension specialists recommend avoiding grazing on these forages until plants reach about 24 inches tall and feeding hay or grain before turnout so hungry animals are less likely to consume large amounts of potentially toxic forage. Clinical signs can appear quickly and may include rapid breathing, muscle tremors, excessive salivation, staggering and collapse. If poisoning is suspected, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Unwanted drug take back coming to Nevada October 24th
Bring your prescription drugs for disposal to the Nevada Police Department at 120 S. Ash Street in Nevada. Police personnel and volunteers will be stationed in the lobby for a convenient drive up and drop off option. Prescription drugs can also be dropped off at the permanent drop box in the lobby of the Nevada Police Department during regular business hours. These services are free and anonymous, no questions asked.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows year after year that the majority of misused and abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including someone else’s medication being stolen from the home medicine cabinet.
For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the October 24th Take Back Day event, contact Lieutenant Williamson at the Nevada Police Department at 417-448-5100.

Ellett Memorial recognizes Matthew Desbien
A respiratory therapist (RT) helps diagnose, treat and manage conditions that affect your lungs. They perform tests and evaluations, manage ventilators, administer oxygen and medication, and work alongside physicians and other healthcare providers to develop treatment plans to help restore or maintain lung and breathing function. They are an often overlooked, but nonetheless essential part of a patient's care team.
This Respiratory Care Week we also wanted to take a moment to spotlight Rural Sleep Solutions, who we partner with to provide our patients with in-hospital and at-home sleep studies. Thank you for partnering with us to help us provide diagnostic Sleep Studies to our rural community!
