LOCAL NEWS-BUTLER CITY COUNCIL-MAY 21, 2013

In Butler City Council news, we told you yesterday about the groundbreaking ceremony for the Solar Farm, held in the Industrial Park. All went smoothly, with comment from Mayor Don Malan and dignitaries from MC Power. Work is expected to begin on more than 12 acres of solar panels…one of the largest in Missouri.

An MC Power official, noting that Butler is the “Electric City,” having been the first west of the Mississippi with its own power plant, said of our soon to have a solar plant, the sunalways shines on Butler. Work is expected to begin on construction in two to four weeks.

As for this week’s City Council regular meeting, it was brief, with City Administrator Mark Arbuthnot’s noting that the application for demolition of unsafe structures has been submitted to the Missouri Department of Economic Development.
We have 35 residences and three commercial buildings to be taken down. The application was sent May 15th, but it will probably be three to four months before we will be notified of a decision. Par for the course…when they need information from us, they want it yesterday, but work on their end for us can take months.

And the Council has received notification from the Missouri Department of Revenue that the half percent sales tax for capital improvements will start being collected October first. The sales tax includes Butler, Bates County, and the state of Missouri, and at present is 7.35 cents on the dollar. As of October first, it will rise to 7.85 on the dollar here in Butler.

And the Council has been advised that a new date has been set for Butler’s downtown projects…June 3rd. The Alumni parade will be this Saturday, May 25th., and the Relay for Life activities will be June 1st.

The EF-0 twister touched down along East 1674 road, three miles South of Stockton and followed a two-mile path through the Orleans Trail Public Use area before lifting over Stockton Lake. The National Weather Service estimated the wind speed at 85 miles-per-hour and said a barn and several trees along the path were damaged but there were no injuries.

Vernon County man's freedom short-lived

A man arrested during a May 8 raid at a county residence was re-arrested shortly after posting bond May 15 -- this time on a Cedar County warrant.Vernon County deputies searched a residence at 18919 South 1200 Road, southwest of Nevada, May 8 and arrested two occupants, Tyler W. Hackleman, 38, and Heather Brown, 36.During the search, deputies discovered what they suspect to be methamphetamine and marijuana, as well as numerous pieces of drug paraphernalia and two firearms. One gun, a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, was loaded and had a round in the chamber, Lt. John Randall said.Hackleman and Brown are convicted felons, and as such, are prohibited from having possession of any type of firearm.

On May 9 both were charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute, maintaining or keeping a public nuisance, unlawful possession of a concealed firearm and endangering the welfare of a child. Both were held in the Vernon County jail on a $100,000 bond.Hackleman posted bond and was released on the condition that he not leave his home, except to go to court, see his attorney or complete a drug test, as already ordered by a probation sentence on an unrelated charge. He also was ordered to have no contact with Brown.

It all went for naught, because Hackleman was arrested after posting bond. The Cedar County warrant charges him with violating probation.Hackleman had pleaded guilty in December 2009 with two counts of possession of anhydrous ammonia in a non approved container, a Class D felony.

In February 2011, Hackleman was given a suspended execution of sentence of six years on each count. He was sentenced to five years of supervised probation.
The basis for the probation violations were the recent Vernon County charges.
He is now being held in the Vernon County jail without bond.
