The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill Missouri has issued a Tornado Watch for Bates County effective until 10pm tonight.

John Dennis Scholarship

Sheriff Dwight Diehl awarded Andrea Strong from Harrisonville High School with the John Dennis Scholarship at Harrisonville’s Senior Excellence in Academics Ceremony Thursday (05-16-13) morning.

The award was established in 1988 in honor of former Scott County Sheriff John Dennis. Dennis served his county for 24 years and, in 1963, was elected president of the Missouri Sheriffs’ Association. In 1976 Dennis retired from the office of sheriff following a successful campaign for the Missouri Senate seat in District 27, a position he held until his retirement from state government in 1992.

The John Dennis Scholarship is awarded to sixteen college-bound Missouri high school seniors who intend to pursue a criminal justice career and will be attending a Missouri college or university.

A Cross Country Bike Ride to Support Alzheimer's Research

The ride is devoted to the advancement of Alzheimer’s disease research and finding a cure. The A Ride to Remember riders unanimously decided on this cause because Lukas and Nathan have seen the damaging effects of Alzheimer’s disease, as certain relatives and friends of theirs have confronted the disease.

Funds directed to support the Alzheimer’s cause that are collected by the A Ride to Remember riders will be forwarded to an Alzheimer’s disease charity association.

This Alzheimer’s disease charity association is a highly accredited, independent, national consortium.  Their mission is to provide the best care and services to individuals suffering from dementia, as well as their caregivers and families. Also, the association is dedicated to answering the social, emotional, education, and practical needs of men and women diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses. This association’s benevolent work has received acclaim and certification by several national institutions, including the Independent Charities of America and the American Institute of Philanthropy.

Show that you care about for individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses by donating to the cause. Donations sent in memory of late loved ones and in honor of loved ones combatting the disease are highly encouraged.

The Riders

The riders will be Alex Cole, Lukas Iraola, Nathan Smith, and Devon Jerrard. The three are classmates at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The four-man group assembled after Lukas proposed a cross-country ride to his roommate Alex, who welcomed the adventure. This made two. Later, Alex passingly discussed the ride to fellow bike mechanic Nathan at the College’s Bike Shop. Nathan was intrigued and committed to the ride. This made three. Then, word spread to Devon, who jumped at the opportunity to take part in this life changing experience. This completed the foursome.

The Ride

We’ll explore the US the way it should be: on two wheels using manpower. The ride will be a east-to-west continental crossing. It will start in Washington, DC on May 12, 2013 and culminate in San Francisco, California on June 23, 2013. Lasting 41 days, the ride will be more than 3,000 miles long and average 85+ miles per day.

We have set a goal of not paying for lodging so that more money can be forwarded to Alzheimer’s disease research. Therefore, we are asking for churches, schools, families, or individuals to open their backyards to us. We simply need an area to pitch our tents and get a goodnight’s sleep. Relay for Life Toddler’s Swimsuit Contest

A toddler’s swimsuit contest will be held at the 2013 Relay for Life event on June 1^st. Dress you toddler in their cutest swimsuit and head to the Butler Square where the Relay for Life event will be held this year. The swimsuit contest will be held at 3pm. Sign-up time will be from 11am to 2pm, They are asking for a one dollar donation per child.

There will be two age groups, one and two year olds (must be able to walk across the stage by themselves) and three and four year olds.

The audience will pick the winners by donating money in your child’s name. The money raised by the contest will go towards cancer research. Prizes will be awarded to the First and Second place winners of each category.

Five Traffic Crash Deaths, One Boating Fatality, & No Drownings Over Memorial Day Holiday

Five people died in traffic crashes over the 2013 Memorial Day weekend.
Last year, nine people were killed during the three-day weekend. During the counting period of 6 p.m., Friday, May 24 through 11:59 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2013, the Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated 274 traffic crashes which included 119 injuries and the five fatalities. Troopers also arrested 129 people for driving while intoxicated. During the 2012 Memorial Day holiday weekend, the Patrol investigated 232 traffic crashes resulting in 95 injuries and five of the nine fatalities. Last year, 184 people were arrested by the Patrol for driving while intoxicated.

There was one boating fatality over the 2013 Memorial Day weekend. Troopers investigated seven boating crashes involving two injuries. There were no drownings. Troopers also arrested 18 people for boating while intoxicated over the holiday weekend. During the 2012 Memorial Day weekend, officers investigated 14 boating crashes, which included six injuries, and zero fatalities. There were no drownings over last year’s Memorial Day weekend. Twenty-four people were arrested for boating while intoxicated during the 2012 holiday.

Edward "Ed" Allen Nichols, 60, Adrian, Missouri, died Monday, May 27, 2013 at his home in Adrian. A memorial visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ed Nichols Memorial Fund, c/o Atkinson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 325, Adrian, MO 64720. A complete obituary will be posted when available.

Producers Must Report Prevented Planting Acreage

(Butler, Mo) May 28, 2013 Mike Finley, Executive Director of Bates County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA), reminds producers of the requirement to report prevented planting acreage for FSA program eligibility. Prevented planted corn must be submitted to the Butler office by close of business June 10^th. Producers are encouraged to contact their insurance agents for crop insurance requirements.

Producers must report crop acreage they intended to plant, but due to natural disaster, they were prevented from planting. Prevented planting acreage must be reported on an FSA-576, Notice of Loss, no later than 15 calendar days after the final planting date. For Bates County, the final planting date for corn is May 25, 2013. Producers maybe asked for fertilizer, seed and chemical receipts on acreage applied for.

If a producer is unable to report the prevented planting acreage within the 15 calendar days following the final planting date, a late-filed report can be submitted for a fee. Late-filed reports can only be accepted if a farm visit can be made to verify the eligible disaster condition that prevented the crop from being planted.

Filing an accurate and timely report for all crops and land uses can prevent loss of benefits for a variety of FSA programs, including the Direct and Counter-cyclical Payment (DCP) Program and Marketing Assistance Loans. Producer is encouraged to ask questions especially if the producer is planning to plant a different crop on the same acreage.
