Update: Early Thursday morning structure fire in Butler

On Thursday, 11/24/16 at approximately 4:25 A.M., the Butler Fire Department, along with automatic mutual aid from Adrian Fire Department were dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 408 W. Ft. Scott St. in Butler.

Upon arrival, fire was visible from the second floor of a 1 1/2 story, wood frame residential structure. At that time mutual aid was also requested from Rich Hill Fire Dept.. A short time later a request was made for Bates County EMS to respond with a unit for standby.

All occupants were determined to be out of the residence.

Upon entering the second floor, fire was found in a concealed space behind a knee wall in the finished attic. There as significant heat and smoke in this area.

The fire was declared under control at approximately 5:11 A.M., with the structure sustaining heavy fire damage to the area of origin, heat and smoke damage throughout the finished attic area, and moderate fire damage to the ceiling of the first floor living room resulting from fire spread into the concealed joist space above the ceiling.

The incident was terminated and last units left the scene at approximately 6:32 A.M. The fire has been determined to be accidental in nature. The residence was owned by Chris Dodson and there were no injuries.
