Scammer alert...

We've received several reports that scammers may be in the area, so be alert. First, a man in a newer white pickup has been canvassing rural residences offering to pave the driveway with asphalt. However, when questioned about the particulars of his business, he leaves. It was also noted that he primarily has spoken to women but left when it was mentioned there was a man in the household.

Likewise, be watchful of scammers hoping to cash in on the Joplin disaster. It is highly recommended that if you donate, do it through a local group such as a firefighter boot block, a church, etc. Be especially weary of donating to anyone who doesn't appear to have the proper credentials or can't answer all your questions.

As always, if you are suspicious of a person asking for money and the situation 'doesn't feel right' call the Bates County Sheriff's office at 660-679-3232.
