Butler City Council meeting news

BUTLER CITY COUNCIL JULY 5, 2011
In Butler City Council news...who would have believed that laws concerning dogs and cats could run nine pages of small print, but that's the case that the council is up against. More talk at the recent council meeting still left a couple of things that didn't set right with some council persons, so the study is still on. When it's done, we'll let you know where you can see or get copies, if you're a pet lover, or a kennel operator, or whatever your connection with pets of the dog and cat families. Just to appraise you of what's involved, just a partial list of things to be considered include rules for both wild and collared animals...length of dog leashes, or rules for penning...licenses of eight dollars, or four dollars if the animal has been spayed or neutered...rabies shots...kennel requirements...rules on vicious dogs..and the fact that no exotic animals will be allowed in the city limits. Believe me, there's much more to be studied. More later!
The council did approve Ordinance 929, to establish a Neighborhood Advisory Commission, which will provide for ongoing citizen input to help improve the overall appearance of our community, and hopefully to get more pride among us for our appearance to ourselves and to visitors.
Also, Resolution 376 was approved, having to do with fees for franchise agreements, right-of-way agreements, and pole attachment agreements submitted to Butler. Again, this is of concern only to companies and persons having to do with those activities.
City Administrator Mark Arbuthnot met with the Bates County Commission to talk about joint purchase of nine-one-one equipment that would serve the entire county, and that talk is continuing, as it's an important item. We'll keep you posted.
If you're a swimmer, you'll be familiar with the "Lazy River" waterway at our Aquatic Center. It developed a leak and the city is on the job to repair it. Soon, hopefully.
The City has now collected over 27-thousand dollars from the Mediacom cable system, as attachment fees over the years from 2004 to the present time.
Mayor Don Malan and the Council have been touring city facilities, and the most recent was the City Shop, the Fire Station, the City Spec Building, and the Water/Sewer material and equipment storage building north of the Fire Station.
Next on their agenda to visit will be Aquatic Center and the old High School building. These tours came about as the group has time for the visits.
The Ace Pipe Cleaning Company got the bid for cleaning, televising and smoke testing Butler sewer lines. Cost will be a little less than 56 thousand dollars, and the amount has been budgeted, so the work will be done.
And in closing, we again remind that City Council meetings are on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at seven p.m., upstairs at City Hall. Entrance is on the west side of the building, and be on time, as the door is locked at meeting time, with no one standing by to let you in late. You're welcome to any and all meetings.
