Legislative Interns in Our Capitol Office

From the desk of Senator David Pearce

I am honored to have two interns serving the 31st Senatorial District in the State Capitol during this spring legislative session. The interns assist our office staff and gain real world experience by engaging in a range of legislative activities, from communications to administrative tasks.

Michaela Martinez of Jefferson City, our full-time intern, is the daughter of Arthur and Datha Martinez; she is the granddaughter of Jean Damron and the late Wilbur Damron of Warrensburg. She is majoring in Psychology and English at Truman State University, and will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in May 2012. Martinez is a member of Delta Zeta; she served as the Motivational Chair, as well as participating in Bacchus and Gamma and Campus Pals. Upon graduation, she plans on continuing her education.

Rebecca Glawe of Peoria, IL, a part-time intern, is the daughter of Regg and Barbara Glawe. She is a Junior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a minor in History at the University of Missouri, Columbia. She is a participant in the Civic Leadership Internship Program which connects academic and legislative programming. Glawe is a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, and has served on their Executive Council. In addition, she volunteers at the Boys and Girl’s Club and American Red Cross. After graduation, she plans on continuing her higher education and remaining active in government.

We are excited to have enthusiastic interns this session. They have become valuable assets to this office. The legislative internship provides a wonderful experience for students to gain an inside view of their state government and the political process.

During this program, interns have the opportunity to work closely with me and the staff. They help address constituent concerns, and attend legislative sessions and hearings. They also give tours around the Capitol, as well as edit and write press releases, and research issues that affect citizens of the 31st District.

For those interested in applying for a legislative internship with this office, or a one day job shadow experience, please go to www.senate.mo.gov, and click on “Apply to be an Intern” under “Constituent Services” to fill out an application.

As always, please feel free to contact me or my staff with any questions or concerns at any time. We look forward to hearing your comments and suggestions and trying to answer any questions you may have. You can reach us by phone at 866-277-0882 (toll-free) or 573-751-2272, or by fax at 573-526-7381.
