Museum Program-May 18-George Caleb Bingham‏

Join us on Saturday, May 18th at 10:00 am in
Robertson Hall, Bates County Museum
802 Elks Drive, Butler, Missouri
for a presentation by

Dr. Joan Stack, Curator of Art,
State Historical Society of Missouri.

The Civil War Art of George Caleb Bingham:
Painting & Politics

Bingham’s painting of “Order No. 11” depicts the desperate and devastating evacuation order that was issued in August 1863.  Dr. Joan Stack is an expert on Bingham and she will interpret the painting, and others, that will reveal new insights into the man and his art.

She will also examine a print of the ‘first’ “Order No. 11” painting that is owned by the Museum.  It is a little known fact that Bingham painted two copies of the work.  The Museum looks forward to learning more about the print in their collection.

2013 marks the 150th anniversary of Order No. 11.

Plan to join us as we learn more about this unprecedented event that forever altered the history of Bates County and western Missouri. The program is free and is sponsored by the Bates Co. Museum and the Mo. Humanities Council.
