In 2009 a Jackson County jury acquitted Howell in the killing of Johnson County teenagers Tabitha Brewer, 16, and Nick Travis, 18, in April of 1998. The body of Nick Travis was found later in Kansas City. The body of Tabitha Brewer has not been located. Several witnesses who testified at the trial said Howell implicated himself in the killings. But after hearing the evidence, the Jackson County jury found Howell not guilty of the charges.
