Area co-ops have been receiving calls from members regarding a phone scam targeting local businesses.
The caller claims to be with the co-op's dispatching. The caller is informing members their most recent credit card payment was not successful and that their account is past due. The member is then informed there is a serviceman on standby, ready to disconnect the power if immediate payment is not made via credit card payment over the phone.
This is a scam. Barton County Electric does not call members with a serviceman nearby asking for credit card information. If there is ever a doubt, hang up and contact Barton County Electric immediately office at 417-682-5636 or 800-286-5636. Please do not fall victim to this scam.
