9-year-old Butler boy who received thousands of get-well letters heads home after three months in hospital

Alex Dewey
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A little boy from Butler, Mo who has been at the University of Kansas hospital for nearly three months with burns on more than half of his body is finally headed home Wednesday.

9-year-old Alex Dewey spent the day making rounds in the burn unit and joking around with nurses. Alex even squirted some of them with water as he said goodbye.

During his stay at the hospital Alex received more mail than any other patient. More than 2,000 cards from people around the world flooded in to wish him a fast recovery.

"We got him through it, and he's the happiest little boy I have seen in the whole wide world,"Alex's grandmother Cynthia Matteson said.

Doctors say Alex has some challenges ahead as he continues his recovery at home.

Alex says he's looking forward to going to school and playing with his friends.
