Updated Obituary - Judi Merritt (Adkins) Vanderburg

Judi Merritt (Adkins) Vanderburg
Judi Merritt (Adkins) Vanderburg, age 64 years, passed away Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Saint Luke's Hospital East, Lees Summit, Missouri.  

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am, Monday, December 5, 2016 at the Vansant-Mills Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior. Inurnment will be at Englewood Cemetery at a later date. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Henry County Historical Society and may be left in care of the funeral home. Judi was born on December 4, 1951 in Clinton, Missouri to Henry M. Adkins and Jane Ermine Sigler. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Clinton and the Henry County Historical Society. She was a great bowler, loved playing slots and scratcher tickets, enjoyed traveling, swimming and was known as “the best diver in Clinton.” She enjoyed antique shopping, planting flowers, crocheting and swimming. Judi had a special place in her heart for animals, she loved Elvis, and very dearly loved her grandchildren.

Judi was preceded in death by her father Henry “Hank” Adkins, her grandparents, and her baby sister, Janet Elizabeth Adkins.

Among survivors are her mother; Jane Adkins of Clinton, MO, son; Dustin Vanderburg of Clinton, MO, three daughters; Erin Stout (Chris) of Liberty, MO, Nikki Groom (Shawn) of Clinton, MO, and Morgan Vanderburg-Carter (Brian) of Deepwater, MO, sister; Janie Luker of Clinton, MO, nine grandchildren; Makayla, Logan, Katlyn, Riley, Lana, Keira, Collin, Machele, and Evan, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home of Clinton, Missouri.



Kansas City man arrested in Henry County

On 12/3/16 around 8:20pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Henry County arrested 36 year old Matthew K. Chiles of Kansas City, Missouri.

Mr. Chiles was arrested for 1.) Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance- Methamphetamine 2.) Possession of Drug Paraphernalia 3.) Speeding 4.) No Seatbelt.

He was booked into the Henry County Jail and placed on a 24 hour hold.

Updated Obituary - David Allen Woodall

David Allen Woodall
David Allen Woodall, age 79, resident of Redfield, KS, died Thursday, December 01, 2016, at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, MO. He was born on October 26, 1937, in Mission, TX, the son of Clarence and Cecelia Grove Woodall. He proudly served our country in the U. S. Navy, retiring in 1977 after 22 years of service. 

He then worked for a fiberboard plant, a cement plant, and later for shipyards from coast to coast. He married Sylvia Henderson on January 31, 1960, in Miami, OK. David enjoyed fishing and visiting the casinos. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #2175 Nevada, MO, and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife Sylvia of the home; 3 sons, David Nolen Woodall, Ft. Scott, KS, Robert W. Woodall, Branchville, SC, and John A. Woodall, Bronaugh, MO; a daughter, Beverly Rast and husband Guy, Coolidge, AZ; a brother, Morris Woodall and wife Vonnie, Montana; 17 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Crosby; 2 sisters, Lilly Conner, and Elaine Marion; a brother, Raymond Woodall; and his parents.

Jim Marion will conduct funeral services at 12:30 PM Monday, December 5th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Navy Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to the David Woodall Memorial Fund and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

Margaret Brownback Gabe, age 84, of Midwest City, Oklahoma formerly of Linn County, Kansas passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2016.

On 12/3/16 around 4:10pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County arrested 27 year old Nathaniel J. Morris of Lees Summit, Missouri after a rollover accident on I-49 North of Adrian.

Mr. Morris was arrested for 1.) Driving While Intoxicated - Prior Offender 2.) Lane Violation.

He was booked into the Bates County Jail and placed on a 12 hour detox hold.

Minnesota man arrested in Adrian

On 12/3/16 around 4:25am the Adrian Police Department arrested 31 year old Jeffrey N. Arwick of Grandview, Minnesota.

Mr. Arwick was arrested on 1.) Failure to appear warrant .

He was booked into the Bates County Jail and placed on a $400 cash only bond.

Harrisonville man arrested in St. Clair County

On 12/3/16 around 6:03pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in St. Clair County arrested 18 year old Hayden D. Chiasson of Harrisonville, Missouri.

Mr. Chiasson was arrested for 1.) Misdemanor Possession of Marijuana 2.) Unlawful use of drug paraphernalia 3.) No Seatbelt 4.) Speeding 5.) No Insurance.

He was cited with tickets and released.

Update: Lees Summit man injured in rollover accident North of Adrian

On 12/3/16 around 3:40pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Adrian Police Department, Bates County Sheriffs Office and Bates County EMS all responded to a one vehicle rollover accident on I-49 at Mile Marker 142.6 (North of Adrian).

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2006 Cadillac DTS driven by 27 year old Nathaniel J. Morris of Lees Summit, Missouri traveled off the roadway, struck a ditch and overturned.

Mr. Morris sustained minor injuries in this accident and he was transported by ambulance to the Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene by Don's Tow of Butler, Missouri

Eldorado Springs man arrested in Vernon County

On 12/2/16 around 10:26pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Vernon County arrested 26 year old Patrick O. Williams of Eldorado Springs, Missouri.

Mr. Williams was arrested for 1.) Driving While Intoxicated 2.) Speeding 3.) No Insurance 4.) No Seatbelt.

He was booked into the Vernon County Jail and he is currently listed as bondable.

Obituary - Donna Louise (Lechman) Fisher

Donna Louise (Lechman) Fisher, 84, Nevada, MO passed away on Friday, December 2, 2016 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, MO. Donna was born March 24, 1932 in Orlando, OK to Thomas L. and Dora (Finnell) Jeans. She was united in marriage to Jack Lechman in 1953 and he preceded her in death in 1975.

Donna was raised in Oklahoma and graduated from high school there. Following high school Donna began working for the phone company in Orlando as a switchboard operator and met her future husband, Jack, who was also employed by the phone company. After their marriage they moved to Sterling, CO where they resided for a number of years. Donna was a homemaker and also worked for the Nevada City Hospital in both physical and occupational therapy after coming to Nevada. Donna had also lived in Kearney for nearly 20 years and had worked at the Jesse James Homestead Museum for many years. Donna loved animals and watching butterflies and hummingbirds.

Survivors include her children, Rick Busch and his wife Kathy, Enid, OK, Dale Busch and his wife June, Edmond, OK, Van Lechman and his wife Liz, Nevada, Jack Lechman and his wife Pauletta, Nevada, Tom Lechman, Joplin, MO, Linda Byram and husband John, Walker, MO, Gary Lechman, Nevada, Tina Lechman, Lathrop, MO; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Delbert Jeans and wife Gladys, Thayer, KS, and Joe Jeans, Nevada, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jack Lechman, two brothers, Lawrence Jeans and J.T. Jeans and his wife, Ann Jeans, and an infant son, Dale Lechman.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Ferry Funeral Home with Rev Bill Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Deerfield Cemetery. Those who wish may contribute to the Moore-Few Care Center c/o Ferry Funeral Home in her memory.

Update: Butler man killed after being stuck by vehicle on I-49

On 12/3/16 around 4:09am the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with the Bates County Sheriff's Department and Bates County EMS responded to a vehicle that struck a pedestrian in the Northbound Lanes of I-49 at Mile Marker 132.6 just North of Butler.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the Northbound 2012 International Conventional tractor trailer driven by John W. Draper of Tulsa, Oklahoma struck 22 year old Dalton Z. McGuire of Grandview, Missouri ( Formerly of Butler) a he was walking on roadway.

Mr. McGuire was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Bates County Coroner Gary L. Schowengerdt.

This is Troop A of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's 74 Fatality of 2016.

Rollover accident just north of Adrian

 Adrian fire, Bates County EMS and the highway patrol have just been called to the scene of a rollover accident just north of Adrian on I-49. Initial reports are that the subject is out of the vehicle and is alert and conscious.

Use caution if traveling through the area; we will provide updates as they become available.

Police respond to shots fired this morning in Butler

Around 3:30am this morning the Butler Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the 300 Block of West Ohio Street in Butler.

Upon arrival to the scene several witnesses in this area claimed to hear 5-7 gunshots ringing out through the neighborhood.

Butler officers canvassed the area and located some spent shell casings and the firearm at a unknown residence on Ohio Street.



Samantha J. Embrey 
One male suspect who was identified as 29 year old Erick L. Adams and one female suspect who was identified as 29 year Samantha J. Embrey both of Butler, Missouri were both arrested and both were placed on a 24 hour hold.

An investigation is pending and more information will be published when it's made available to us.

Rich Hill man injured in Polk County crash

On 12/2/16 around 2:06pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Polk County responded to a two vehicle accident on Missouri 13 Highway around 7 miles North of Bolivar, Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2013 International driven by 21 year old Joshua A, Turner of Glendale, Wisconsin was slowing due to mechanical issues when he was struck in the rear by a 2015 Peterbilt driven by 59 year old Allen W. Cumpton of Rich Hill, Missouri.

Mr. Cumpton sustained minor injuries in this accident and he was transported by private vehicle to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damages and both were towed from the scene by Mike's Wrecker Service of Bolivar, Missouri.

Pedestrian struck and killed on I-49

Around 3:30am this morning the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle and killed around the 133 Mile Marker on I-49.

A investigation is pending at this time and the name of the person hasn't been released.

Sheriff on a Shelf spotted at Adrian park


As promised, the Sheriff on a Shelf has made his appearance at the main shelter house at the Adrian City Park tonight to help with a bicycle drive for local children this Christmas. Adrian police chief Chris Dillon, along with officer Brian Bearce will remain on site throughout the night collecting bikes for the effort.

Feel free to stop by, drop off a donation and enjoy some fun conversation. And yes, there's a nice cozy fire to warm you while you visit.

Obituary - Melba Pauline Crabtree

Melba Pauline Crabtree
Melba Pauline Crabtree, 82, Nevada, MO passed from this life on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada. Melba was born December 23, 1933 in Foster, MO to Claude G. and Lorene M. (Hooper) Hines. In 1952 she was united in marriage to Robert Kinney and to this union six children were born. She later married Hal Crabtree on February 29, 1984 and he preceded her in death in 2012.

Melba was raised in Bates County in the Foster area. She attended Miami High School in Bates County and graduated with the Class of 1952. Following high school she was employed by Sears in Kansas City, MO, King Radio in Lenexa, KS for a time, and then also worked as a Dental Assistant in Olathe, KS for nine years. Melba was a member of the Osawatomie Christian Church. She was an active volunteer as a youth mentor with Al-Anon in Osawatomie, KS. Melba enjoyed growing flowers, hand crafts and was a member of a crafting club in Osawatomie. She also enjoyed traveling, boating, fishing, and seeing the country with her husband Hal in their RV, and caring for her cat Dolly.

Survivors include four children, Michael Kinney and his wife Pam, North Kansas City, MO, Terry Weis and her husband Mike, Salina, KS, Charie Clark, Richards, MO, Mary Clark and her husband John, Lamar; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Ray Hines, Kansas City, MO; one sister, Nancy Hudson and her husband Charles, Lane, KS; numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Patrick Kinney; one daughter, Diana Robertson-Brewster; two brothers, Richard Hines, and Claude Hines, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 5, 2016 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Jason Shackleford officiating. 

Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Paola City Cemetery, Paola, KS. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home. 

Those who wish may contribute in her memory to the National Arthritis Foundation in c/o Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.


Updated Obituary - Kathy Elaine Edwards

Kathy Elaine Edwards, 68, Nevada, MO passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Nevada Nursing and Rehab in Nevada. Kathy was born July 13, 1948 in Liberty, MO to Joseph Wayne and Mildred Annette (Atwood) Pauling.

Kathy was raised in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School in the Class of 1966. Following high school she was married to Phill Edwards and moved to Independence, MO where she raised her son, Wayne.  


She later move to Lexington, MO during which time she worked at the Ray County Memorial Hospital for 14 years and also devoted her life to caregiving for her aunt Doris Hall and her mother Mildred Pauling. She has resided back in Nevada since 2006.

Survivors include one son, Wayne Edwards and his wife Kesha, Nevada; four grandchildren, Tyler Edwards, Haley Edwards, Payton Edwards, Korbyn Edwards; one sister; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.



A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at the Rosebank Cemetery, Mulberry, KS with Rev. Bill Platt officiating. Friends may call from now and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Razor, anyone?


The Bates County Sheriff Deputies beard program has come to an end. Collectively the Deputies have raised a total of $2,414.00 with 100% of the funds going to benefit Bates County kids at Christmas.

A portion of the money will be used  to purchase a couple of bicycles for the Adrian Police Department to give away; 'adopt' a couple of children for Christmas; the rest of the funds will go to support the 'Shop with A Deputy' program. 

Funds can still be donated until December 15th. We appreciate all the public support and will post a list of all those that supported this fun effort.

Arrest warrant issued for Appleton City man

On Nov. 29, a St. Clair County warrant was issued for Terry Sieleman, 38, Appleton City, charging him with failing to appear in court on an original class C felony possession of a controlled substance. 

Bond is set at $10,000 cash only. The original charge stems from an Appleton City Police Department investigation in October 2013.



Milo man arrested in St. Clair County

On Dec. 1, James Moore, 26, Milo, was arrested in St. Clair County on a Bates County warrant for failing to appear in court on an original misdemeanor charge of no insurance. Bond is set at $2,500 cash or surety. 

The arrest came after a St. Clair County deputy conducted a traffic stop for speeding on Highway 82, Osceola.

Update: Arrest made after kidnapping in Rich Hill

On December the 1st at approximately 0600 hours the Bates County Sheriff’s Office, and Rich Hill Police Department responded to a report of a Kidnapping at Pumpin Petes gas station. Dispatched advised officers that the adult female victim was hiding in the gas station bathroom.

The victim stated that the suspect was located in a white colored Ford F-250 with a broken back window. The victim stated that the adult male subject was armed and dangerous. The suspect and truck was located on the northwest side of the parking lot.


Due to the nature of the call the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team was activated and responded to the scene. The suspect was sitting in the truck with it running. The Bates County Sheriff’s Office blocked the suspect’s vehicle in through the use of placing a vehicle in the front and back while SERT surrounded the truck and commanded the suspect to exit the vehicle. The suspect refused to comply.

The driver side window was broken out to gain control of the suspect and remove him from the truck. The suspect was then arrested, placed in handcuffs and transport to the Bates County Jail.

Items located inside the truck was ½ oz of methamphetamine, 22 caliber Beretta rifle and a sawed off shot gun and a high point hand gun. The truck was stolen out of Joplin. 

The suspect was identified as Allen Dean Wasburn DOB 02-26-1981 of Kansas City, Mo. He was charged with Possession of Controlled substance; Methamphetamine a class C felony. 
Tampering with motor vehicle- 1st Degree class C felony. Unlawful use of drug paraphernalia a class A misdemeanor. Bond was set at $25,000.00 cash only
