From the Bates County Sheriffs Office

It is the season for thunderstorms. All thunderstorms produce lighting. If you hear the sound of thunder, then you are in danger from lightning. Lightning kills 75 to 100 people each year.

The best place to go during a thunderstorm is a sturdy building or a car. Avoid sheds, picnic areas, baseball dugouts and bleachers. If there is no shelter around you, stay away from trees. If you're with a group of people stay about 15 feet from each other. Stay out of the water.

If you're indoors do not use a corded phone. Do not use electric equipment like computers and appliances during the storm. Also it is a good idea to stay away from windows and doors. Remember to always listen to the radio or television for the latest information and instructions for your area.
