From the desk of Bates County Coroner Greg D. Mullinax

With the saddening discoveries of human remains in our neighboring Cass County in recent weeks, several people have asked me questions regarding those cases. I.e., how they are handled, and what would happen if such discoveries ever took place in Bates County.

While I certainly hope no family in our county has to endure what these families are going through, you should know that as Coroner, I am have taken this opportunity to make sure we are prepared to handle these situations should I ever need to.

My office partners with NMS Laboratories, who has specialized in identifying difficult an degraded DNA samples related to missing or unidentified persons investigations for over a decade. Through my partnership with them, I am now qualified and trained to provide:

- Paternity, maternity, single parent, sibling and half-sibling analysis of a variety of sample types including blood, tissue, bone, and decomposed remains.
- Critically refined methods to locate and isolate the most promising samples to process, no matter how challenging.
- Compliance with the FBI's Quality Assurance Standards to ensure efficiency when missing persons cases require CODIS upload, with access to the database through NMS's partnership with NDIS lab partners.
- Rapid turnaround time with analytical testing often completed in 4 weeks; however 7-10 day expedited service available when necessary.

This is part of my continued commitment as Coroner of Bates County: to provide the best services available for every possible scenario.

As Coroner, I'm available to speak to your civic or community group on the functions of my office and the services we provide. Just message us on Facebook or send an email to greg@batescountycoroner.com if this is of interest to you.
