David was born October 24, 1945 in Pattonsburg, Missouri. He was the son of James and Edith (Walker) Johnson. On August 29, 1965, David married the love of his life, Velma VanGorkom in Lathrop, Missouri. Together, David and Velma were blessed with two daughters, Ashley and Jennifer.
As a United States Marine, David bravely served his country as a rifleman during the Vietnam War. For 38 years, David lovingly supported his family as a Maintenance Mechanic for Bayer. He enjoyed spending time with his family, going fishing, and target practice. Every 4th of July David would be found in his element- arranging and orchestrating theatrical displays for his family and friends, which brought him much joy; it was said that he had missed his true calling.
David was a member of the Belton Assembly of God Church. He selflessly served his Lord and church family as a deacon and also as a board member of the “Heart and Hand” ministry within the church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Edith Johnson; his brother James Lee Johnson; and sister, Elizabeth Helgen. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Velma Johnson; daughters, Ashley Johnson and Jennifer Wurtz (Ronnie); seven grandchildren, Christopher, Macee, Victoria, Auttumn, Taylar, Dakota, and Saige; and one great-granddaughter, Ember Greigh.
