Deputies in Henry County Investigate Shooting of Suspect Involved in Earlier Vehicle Pursuit

According to Henry County Sheriff Kent Oberkrom, on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at around 12:45p.m., the Johnson County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit was involved in a vehicle pursuit, which began in the Leeton area and ended in Henry County, east of MO-Highway 13 on a county road in the Shawnee Mound area, when the driver exited, then fled from his vehicle on foot into a cornfield.

A search of the area was conducted by numerous law enforcement officers, including a scent-tracking K9, however no apprehension was made. 

The driver of the fleeing vehicle was identified as Kevin Dale Jones, age 31, of Kansas City, who had an active felony arrest warrant from Lafayette County, Missouri, for drug-related charges. 

Shortly after 6:00 p.m., telephone calls were received by Henry County Central Communications reporting that a male subject closely matching the description of Jones was observed by residents in the 900 block of NE 231, approaching their houses. Several minutes later, it was reported that Jones had been shot and was wounded. 

Cpls. Aaron Richardson and Zach Sebree arrived on scene and located Jones seated beside a residential driveway, with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to one of his thigh regions. 

Mr.Jones was taken into custody on the arrest warrant, then treated and transported by a Golden Valley Memorial Hospital EMS crew to a waiting helicopter. He was subsequently flown to a Kansas City area hospital for further treatment. “This is currently classified as an active investigation, therefore no further information can be released at this time. 

The scene of the shooting was processed by responding deputies and items pertaining to the incident were collected. Once a review of the facts of the case has been completed, a reclassification of the investigation’s status may occur in the coming days”, Sheriff Oberkrom stated. Deputies that responded to the scene to assist with the investigation were Major Rob Hills, Detectives Lenny Kubilus and Dee Dugan and Deputy Mitchell Swindell
