Obituary - John “Jack” William Lyon, Jr.

John “Jack” William Lyon, Jr., 83, Lamoni, Iowa, left this life Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at the Clearview Home in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 31, 2017 at the Faith Baptist Church in Harrisonville, Missouri, with visitation from 12:00-1:00.

Jack was born December 18, 1933 in Harrisonville, Missouri, the son of John William and Crystal Mae (Beswick) Lyon. He grew up in Harrisonville and Evergreen, Colorado, and then back to Harrisonville, where he graduated from high school in 1952. He graduated from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri. 

Jack served two years in the United States Marine Corps, from June, 1956, until his honorable discharge in April, 1958. In 1956, while serving in the military, Jack married Shirley Janice Spillman. The couple was blessed with two children, Daniel and Elizabeth. Later Jack married Alta Delories (Williams) Sutherland.

Jack’s work was in road construction where he bid jobs as the cost estimator. He started out working for Tobin Construction in Kansas City, Missouri, and later lived in Texas. He finished his working career doing railroad track construction for Neosho. He moved to Lamoni, Iowa in 2015, and in May of 2017, into Clearview Home in Mt. Ayr, Iowa.

In his free time, Jack was an avid reader, jogger, and artist, doing sketching and painting. He also enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a currently a member of the Lamoni Baptist Church. He also was a Right to Life in Harrisonville, Missouri supporter.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his sister, Suzanne Day. He is survived by his wife, Delories Lyon, Eads, Tennessee; children, Danny and Vickie Lyon, Rockwell, Texas, and Elizabeth and Bob Bell, Lamoni, Iowa; grandchildren, Sky and Helen Lyon, Andrew Lyon, Christopher and Teal Bell, Bryan Bell, and Brandon and Maggie Bell; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Adam, Blake, Lucas, and Brooklyn; brother-in-law, Harold Day, Harrisonville, Missouri; nephew, Brent Day; niece, Anissa Day; other relatives and friends.
