From the Louisburg Kansas Police Department

It appears that email fraud is still among us. This time the Louisburg City Clerk received an email communication from a lawless subject passing themselves off as the Mayor, requesting a substantial amount of money for a project.

Fortunately our City Clerk recognized that this was probably fraudulent activity and before any funds were transferred, they made sure to check the legitimacy of the email message they had gotten from the Mayor. In this instance the message appeared to be from the Mayor himself, with all of their accurate information and the proper email address associated with the memo, however, upon typing a return message our Clerk saw that the text was now addressed to another email sources other than the Mayor's.

This is what many refer to as Phishing or Spoofing, where criminal subjects pass their messages off to make them appear from a legitimate source, or from someone who is known to you. These are both types of con-games used against you in order to gain your personal information and other data so that it can be used to help them further their goals of stealing from you and supporting their other criminal activities. It is often used at times as a mechanism for these immoral miscreants to take control over you computer and spread computer threats and other viruses.

In this instance, the perpetrators were thwarted in their attempt to steal funds from the Citizen's of Louisburg, but oftentimes these degenerates are successful in their efforts and it is up to all of us to remain diligent in our computer usage by recognizing these acts when they occur. We should also keep our anti-virus software up to date and tighten your security settings if you feel that you are susceptible to these forms of attack.

Thanks for taking the time to read this message. Evil is out their and we strive to do our best to keep it at bay!
