Shirley’s wishes were to be cremated, with no public services planned. Inurnment will be private in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Memorial contributions are suggested to any charity of the donor’s choice.

Shirley was born February 9, 1936 in Butler, Missouri, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Surfus) Deems. She was raised and attended school in Butler before marrying Carter Spears in 1953. Carter served in the military, which took the couple to Hawaii, where their first daughter Kimberley was born in 1954. After her husband’s military service, the family returned to Butler where their second daughter Lori was born in 1957.
Carter’s career in banking took the family to Raytown, Missouri as well as Olathe, Kansas. Upon retirement, Shirley and Carter moved to Texas. Those who knew Shirley will remember that she loved fishing and could out-fish any man! She and Carter enjoyed much time fishing together until his passing in August of 1997, after which Shirley returned to Kansas City.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband; an infant daughter Angelina; three brothers: Harley Deems, Lloyd Deems, and Lelan Deems; and one sister, Helen Sweezy. She is survived by her two daughters: Kimberley Buso and Lori Lopez and husband Phil, and their children Wesley Lopez and wife Andrea and Taylor Lopez; great-grandchildren Brynleigh and Becklynn Lopez; three sisters: Donna Post, Dixie Harper, and Lynda Humphreys; sisters-in-law Gloria Deems and Bobbie Deems; one brother-in-law Emil Spears and wife Judy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
