From the Joplin Police Department

On November 10, 2017 at 2:41pm we received a call to Freeman Hospital, 1102 West 32nd, for a 3-year-old boy brought in with serious injuries. Shortly thereafter, the child was transported to Children's Mercy in Kansas City.

Our officers and detectives responded to Freeman and began their investigation. They determined the child resides at 1502 South Michigan, Building 5 Apartment 11, and believe the incident occurred at that address. Detectives went to Kansas City this morning to continue their investigation. As a result, the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office issued a warrant for the arrest of Lenard Valdez, 21, Joplin, for Child Abuse with a $15,000 bond plus $5,000 cash.

He was taken into custody at a hotel in Kansas City by Kansas City Police Department. He is currently being held at a jail there, therefore we don’t have a mugshot to release.

The child is currently listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. The investigation into this incident is still on-going.

Update 11-12-17:
The victim in this case has died from his injuries. He was pronounced dead today at approximately 2:47pm at a hospital in Kansas City. He is identified as 3-year-old Jonathan Munoz-Bilbrey. This case is now a death investigation and is on-going. An autopsy will be scheduled.
