Fight in the Barton County Jail

On 12-23-2017 a fight was investigated in the Barton County jail by deputies of the Sheriff's Office. At approximately 1:30pm the on duty Jailer Chase Mcclane went upstairs to do a routine check of the inmates. When he got upstairs he could hear an actual physical altercation going on with two men yelling at each other. Jailer Mcclane called for assistance to come and open up the cell block upstairs to deal with the subjects.

Deputies arrived upstairs and was able to get the two parties separated. One of two parties sustained serve enough injuries to be transported to the hospital for medical treatment. During the interviews with witnesses in the same jail cell it was stated that they did not see anything and that the inmate must have fallen down.  The inmate which was transported for medical assistance denied wanting to file criminal charges against the suspect nor did he want to file a report or make a statement. The parties that we believed was involved with the argument and fight was Carl Dale Carter, and Jerry L. Rowell the two were separated and put in different cell blocks. Rowell was asked for his permission to put the picture of the injury he sustained in the media release and he granted permission too share the information.

In 2017 we had a record number of inmates being transported out of the county to be housed in other jurisdictions due to all kinds of reasons, but the biggest is the lack of space or ability to segregate certain inmates from others.

We really try to keep from having these kinds of issues from happening, but as you all know we do run a jail and these things happen. When they do happen though they cost time and money in dealing with.

In this event we had to call in off duty personnel to go with the inmate to the hospital for medical treatment as well as to deal with the current inmates at the Sheriff's Office.
