Joseph F. Putthoff, passed away peacefully at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri on December 9, 2017. He was the son of Norbert Henry and Lauretta Frances (Cook) Putthoff, born October 14, 1942 in Germantown, Missouri. Joe spent his formative years helping his parents on their farm in Henry County, and graduated from Montrose High School in 1960. Shortly after completing his education Joe was drafted into the United States Army, where he served his country proudly during the Vietnam War. Upon his return he completed a 28 year career at AT&T/Western Electric in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, where he retired in 1990. Along with this, all his life Joe raised beef cattle on his farm near Germantown, where he spent many happy hours.
Joe selflessly served as the guardian of two of his siblings after the premature death of his parents. Joe was a warm and generous man, who had a big heart. It was widely rumored that he was a teller of tall tales and could spin a yarn with best of storytellers. He loved animals, especially his dogs. One of his favorite activities was to attend auctions, where he always bid-up the prices and frequently bought “mystery boxes,” much to the chagrin of his family. He also enjoyed “date night” with Nat at the sale barn on Saturday nights. Joe deeply loved spending time with his family and friends.
Preceding Joe in death were his parents, Norbert and Lauretta (Cook) Putthoff, a sister, Mary Putthoff, and one brother Willie Putthoff.
He is survived by Nathalie Schooley of the home; his daughter, Shilon (Dan) Lovett of Independence, Missouri, other children, Debbie (Ronnie) Dains of Rockville, Missouri and Mike (Rebecca) Schooley of Appleton City; grandchildren: Kaylee, Trevin, Ashton, Colten, and Jainna Lovett; other grandchildren: Misty (Mark) Long, Mendy (Jake) Bowlby, Kristie Dains (Casey) , Kalie Dains (Tyler ), Jesse (Jeni) Schooley, Carly (Wyatt) Cumpton, Jacob, Hallie and Tucker Schooley; eight great-grandchildren; siblings: Rita (Gary) Schafer of Kansas City, Missouri, Gene (Beverly) Putthoff of Belton, Missouri, Phil (Cheryl) Putthoff of Peculiar, Missouri, Rose (Stan) Brann of Kansas City, Missouri, and Jane (Hank) Swaters of Montrose, Missouri; eleven nieces and nephews; 24 great-nieces and nephews. He will dearly missed by all of his many friends and family.
