Officer involved shooting in Cass County

On February 14, 2018, at 11:31 p.m., the Belton Police Department advised they were pursuing a red Ford Explorer southbound from their city limits on Interstate 49 regarding a shooting call.

Two troopers were on a traffic stop in the area at the 170 mile marker. Troopers successfully deployed a tire deflation device and the suspect vehicle became disabled just south of that location.

The fleeing suspect got out of the vehicle pointing a gun at his own head. He began walking down the interstate pointing the weapon at vehicles, and at one point fired at a passing motorist. The driver then forced another motorist out of a white GMC Terrain and fled in that vehicle northbound on Interstate 49 into Raymore. Troopers, a Cass County Sheriff’s Deputy, and Raymore Police Officers pursued the suspect into Raymore. The suspect got out of the vehicle in a subdivision near North Dean Avenue and Lucy Webb.

The suspect began walking away from officers while pointing the gun at his own head and at officers. At 11:50 p.m., troopers advised shots had been fired. The white male suspect, age 27, from Houston, Texas, was injured during the gunfire and transported to Research Hospital, in Kansas City, were he later died.

A computer check of the suspect revealed two active felony warrants for his arrest from Jackson County, Missouri.

The officer involved shooting is being investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Belton Police Department and the Raymore Police Department are assisting with the investigation.
