Appleton City news


AIM Easter Egg Hunt is 1:00 p.m. at the Montrose Park Saturday, March 31 (rain or shine) for children ages 0 to 4th Grade.  Bring your own basket.

FCCLA will be cooperating with the Optimist Club on the Easter Egg Hunt at the City Park on 2:00 p.m. Saturday March 31 after the baseball clinic.

The Church of God (Holiness) invites the children of the community to an Easter egg hunt, hosted by Pat Shockey, on Easter Sunday (April 1) at the Church on the corner of Beech and First Streets at 2:00 p.m. until the eggs are gone.  They will reschedule if there is inclement weather. 

The Appleton City PTO will have a Bake Sale Saturday March 31 in front of Food Fair Supermarket starting at 7:30.  Baked good donations can be left at Brown Chiropractic starting at 9:00 a.m. on Friday March 30. All proceeds help support the AC PTO.  The AC PTO supports the elementary teachers and staff and provides funds for class field trips. Come out and support your local PTO and let them help you with your Easter baking. 

The Appleton City Cemetery will start spring clean-up soon. Please pick up flowers and decorations.

Hudson R-IX will not be in session Friday, March 30 or Monday, April 2 for Easter break.

The Montrose Festival Committee is hosting their Easter Chicken Dinner and Bake Sale March 31 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the VFW Hall.  Photos with the Easter bunny are available from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.  Dinner is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 5 - 10 years old and under 5 years are free.  The Bake Sale is a freewill donation.

FarmHouse Kitchen will serve its annual Easter dinner Sunday, April 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  This year’s menu is roasted turkey, spiral sliced ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green beans, deviled eggs, hot roll, homemade dessert and tea, coffee or water.  Children 5 and under dine for $4.99, 6-10 years old for 6.99 and adults for 13.99.  Reservations are appreciated but walk-ins welcome.  Sumo's Pub will be closed April 1and will re-open at 5:00 p.m. Monday April 2.

The 2018 Appleton City Spring City Wide Garage Sale dates will be April 6-7. Permits are $5 and can be purchased at City Hall through noon on April 4. A permit for the city pole shelter is $25, a stage permit is $15 and a lawn permit is $10. These can also be purchased on a first come, first served basis beginning March 26 at City Hall. Maps will be available at Food Fair, Powell's True Value and Casey’s. House of Joy Ministry will be at the City Park at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday to pick up donations. The Knights of Columbus will have their monthly pancake and sausage breakfast at the Knight’s Hall in Montrose on Sunday, April 8 from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m.  Treat your family to a hot breakfast you don’t have to cook or clean up.  A free will donation will be greatly appreciated

Kindergarten Round up Screening and Enrollment Day at Appleton City Elementary for the 2018 – 2019 school year will be held Tuesday, April 10.  If your child will be 5 before August 1, please call Malia Mount in the Elementary Office at 660-476-2108 for an appointment.  The following items are required for enrollment: immunization records, state issued birth certificate, social security card and proof of residence.  Your child can receive the immunizations that are needed to attend Kindergarten anytime on or after his/her fourth birthday.  You do not need to wait until age five. They encourage you to have your child fully immunized now and bring the immunization record to school on the day of Kindergarten screening. If you have questions regarding required immunizations, please feel free to contact Nikki Piepmeier, School Nurse, at 660-476-2601, option #7.

Hudson R-IX Elementary will hold their annual preschool & kindergarten screening on Thursday, April 5.  Please call Ladonna Green at (660) 476-5467 to set up an appointment.  You will need your child’s social security card, birth certificate, and current immunization record.  If you call and the school office is closed, please leave a message and they will get back to you.

On Sunday, April 15, 2018, the AIM club of Montrose and other friends and family will host a fund raiser for Maria Goth Fennewald, currently of Appleton City.  Maria recently suffered from a severe stroke and continues to battle her daily recovery and the extensive therapy that is required.
A dinner of pulled pork and smoked chicken and all the fixings will be served at the Montrose Community Building from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  There will be a silent and live auction along with a gun raffle, bake sale, etc. AIM members will be taking orders for “Team Maria” t-shirts and there will be some for sale the day of the event but early sales are preferred.  A “Love Fund” account has been set up at the Montrose Saving Bank if you would like to just make a charitable donation.  If you would like to help, donate, etc. please call Kristina at 660-492-3436 or David at 660-492-7749.  If you are donating a large item for the auction, please contact them soon so they can get some of the larger item posted on the website.

The Wayside Inn Museum, Preserve Our Past Society of El Dorado Springs, is proud to present cowboy poet and singer/songwriter Johnny Kendrick for their annual meeting, 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 9 at the museum in downtown, El Dorado Springs, Missouri.  Come see the beautiful museum and enjoy snacks on Monday, April 9, and welcome their very talented special guest, Johnny Kendrick.  They are working on projects to preserve our past, including our annex to house the senior composites that were removed from the high school and military tribute and would like to share that information with you.  Please come out for a fun filled evening. Zink Motor Company and Hudson R-9 PTO are hosting a Ford Drive 4UR School event from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. April 21 at Hudson School.  For every test drive (1 per household) completed Ford will donate $20 to the new playground at Hudson.  Ford will donate $6,000 if 300 test drives are completed!  There is no sales pressure and these are truly designed for Ford to give back to local schools in communities.  During the event the 6-8 grade students will be hosting a bake sale with all sales going to the playground.  To make an appointment, please visit the PTO's webpage www.Facebook.com/HudsonPTO

OATS BUS schedule for the week of April 2: St Clair County to Versailles Apr 3, St Clair County to Bolivar April 5.  For those that live in St Clair County wishing to ride the OATS BUS please call John at 417-309-3464, Julia at 417-309-3463, or in the Lowry City area, call Heidi Carden at 417-309-0146.  Need a ride, call on OATS.  Rides are available to everyone (not just Seniors/Disabled). 24 hour advance reservation is required. Donation per stop is suggested. OATS is a door to door, shared ride service. All vans are equipped with ramps and helpful drivers!

University of Missouri Extension along with Lincoln University are working together to have a Sheep and Goat Workshop that focuses on internal parasite management on the afternoon of April 19 beginning at 4:00 p. m. at the Osceola First Baptist Church at 555 Walnut Street, Osceola.  Susan Jaster with Lincoln University Cooperative Extension Small Farm Outreach Program as well as MU Extension Regional Livestock Specialists Gene Schmitz and Patrick Davis will lead this workshop.  This workshop will include lecture, discussion, and hands-on activity related to body condition scoring, FAMACHA© Scoring, Fecal Egg Count in sheep and goats.  Linda Heryford will provide the sheep and goats used in the demonstrations.  In addition, participants will become certified in FAMACHA eye anemia system and along with the Five Point Check System, is used to determine when sheep and goats need to be dewormed. The workshop cost is $35 per person.  Preregistration, along with fee payment needs to be submitted by April 16 to the St. Clair County MU Extension Center at the St. Clair County Courthouse, P.O. The mission of the Appleton City Landmarks Restoration and Museum Photo Exhibit at the AC Fair is to preserve history and memories. This year, the focus of the exhibit will be the 1970 AC Centennial and the 1995 Quasquacentennial in preparation of the 2020 AC Sesquicentennial. Share with the community what memories you have that will assist in the preparation of another great Appleton City event.  Entry forms will soon be available for pickup at City Hall and at the Museum on Fridays starting in May or email acmolampkin@yahoo.com for a form. See the example display in the former Yoss Window-southwest corner of Main Street. Participation is what makes the Fair.

Appleton City will soon be organizing a committee of citizens to assist in the planning and implementation of the Sesquicentennial (150th) Celebration of our city, which will be celebrated in 2020 during the fair.  Any citizens interested in coming to the inaugural meeting, please feel free to come out on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at the Park Building at 7:00 p.m. For any questions, please contact Rondle Dines at 417-296-3390.

Once again DbarJ Quilts Etc will be sponsoring the Elva Gwinn Huffman Essay Contest for non-profit groups. Any non-profit group can write an
essay about their group, their good works and how they would use the quilt to help them raise money for their cause. It is best if you keep it to no more than 2 pages. Due date for the essays is March 31, 2018.  They will be read and the quilt will be given out on April 2, which is Elva's birthday.
