Obituary - Carl Mansfield Spence

Carl Mansfield Spence, 85, Peculiar, MO, died Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at his home. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2018 at the Large Cemetery in Ft. Scott, KS.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society in memory of Wanda Spence, who died in 1993 from cancer.

Carl was born July 5, 1932 in Garland, KS, the son of Harry and Susan Doris (Mansfield) Spence. He attended high school in Ft. Scott, KS. He started working at age 18 for Bendix, where he worked for 35 years before retiring in 1986. He married Wanda Marie Phillips on May 16, 1951. They were married for 43 years before she died December 29, 1993. He was later married to Rita Bridgforth for nine years, before divorcing in 2013.

While working at Bendix, Carl also built houses, ranched, and enjoyed working on anything with a motor. He also enjoyed yard work. He was very proud of his family and the things he accomplished during his life. He was a Mason since 1959 in Lee’s Summit, MO and Harrisonville, MO.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Wanda, three brothers, Bill, Don, and Harold Spence, and one sister, Callie Sue Brewer. He is survived by one son, Jerry Spence (Nelia), Harrisonville, MO; four daughters, Carlene Rudroff (Rick), Belton, MO, Joann Lasley (Jerry DeMeyer), Kansas City, KS, Kathie Lane, Holts Summit, MO, and Diana Spence, Belton, MO; one sister, Mary Lou Smith, Olathe, KS; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren, and his faithful companion, Molly.
