Obituary - Joan Lee (Hensley) Borders

Joan Lee (Hensley) Borders, 86, passed away June 30, 2018 at Morningside Manor following a short illness. She was born on January 20, 1932 to Melvin and Inez (Ross) Hensley in Humansville, Missouri. Joan gave her life to Christ at the age of 9. She was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church. Joan was united in marriage to “the love of her life”, Jay Borders on June 27, 2009 at Calvary Baptist Church in Nevada, Missouri. 

She was a caring and loving person who was always encouraging to others and willing to help anyone in need. Joan left school after the 10th grade, and later, after raising her seven children achieved her GED, then went on to become an LPN. Joan was a hard-working woman who taught her children the value of a good work ethic. She set the example for them by working two jobs to make sure the children had what they needed. 

Joan went to work for the Nevada State Hospital as an aide and later achieved her Certified Nursing Assistant certificate. After working for several years as an aide she achieved her Licensed Practical Nurse license and retired from the State Hospital as a Licensed Practical Nurse having been an employee for 27 1/2 years retiring in 1991. Following her retirement from the State Hospital, Joan worked for Moore-Few Nursing Facility for 4 years before retiring to enjoy her life with her family. Joan volunteered as the camp Nurse for Baptist Hill in Mt. Vernon, MO for 7 years.

Joan is survived by her loving husband Jay Borders of Nevada, Missouri, her seven children, Shirley Greenstreet of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Bennie (Linda) Salkil of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, Betty (Mike) Morris of Moundville, Missouri, Valerie Haugan, Joplin, Missouri, Doug (Danielle) Salkil, Nevada, Missouri, Rebecca Bogle, Nevada, Missouri, and Shawn (Bobbi) Goodman, Baxter Springs, Kansas, step-children Jim (Aletta) Borders, Nevada, Missouri, Janet (Marc) Jacque, Summerville, South Carolina, Joy (Randy) Cottle, Seymour, Missouri. Additionally, Joan is survived by 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 10 nieces and nephews, 11 step grandchildren, numerous step great-grandchildren, 1 step great-great grandchild, and numerous friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters, 1 grandchild, 2 great grandchildren, and 1 step son.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 6, 2018 at Calvary Baptist Church in Nevada with Pastor Terry Mosher officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.
