Self inflicted gunshot wound in Barton County

On 9-14-2018 The Barton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call in reference to a shooting at a residence in Burgess, Missouri. The 9-1-1 dispatcher was told that a subject had been shot, and he was still armed with a firearm and holding others in a garage.

The dispatcher received information that there were possibly other people hurt inside the garage.

While the dispatcher spoke with the reporting party he was also told of another subject who was armed with a knife that was at the residence.

The Sheriff and Deputies of the Barton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. While en-route to the home mutual aid was requested due to the belief the subject was still armed and not allowing other subjects in the garage to leave. The following agencies where asked to respond to assist, the Crawford County Kansas Sheriff’s Office, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Deputies from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and the Barton County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene first and were able to make the scene safe. Both the subject with the gunshot wound and the firearm was located. The firearm was seized as evidence and the subject was transported to a Joplin Hospital for medical treatment by the Barton County Ambulance.

During the investigation it was learned that there was an argument at the home between Edward Tripodes Sr. and Candy Tripodes. The male subject identified as Edward Tripodes Sr. which already had a firearm out, discharged the firearm and struck himself in the hand. During the investigation subjects were interviewed and a search was conducted at the home.

During the search drug paraphernalia commonly used in the use of the illegal drug methamphetamine was located in the home.

Two female subjects were arrested for being in possession of drug paraphernalia and transported back to the Barton County Sheriff’s Office. Candy L. Tripodes, age 50 and Susan A. Braun, age 61, both of Burgess where transported to the Barton County Sheriff’s Office.

The Department of Family Services was contacted to respond to the scene to assist in the investigation due to there being a minor child in the home and that child being present at the time the firearm was discharged. Reports will be sent to the Barton County Prosecuting Attorney for filing of formal criminal charges.
