Martha grew up in Osawatomie and attended school there. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Vocational Home Economics from Pittsburg State Teachers College in 1951.
She taught Home Economics in Mound City, Kansas. She taught and was the Teacher in Charge at the State School for the Severely Handicapped in Nevada, MO.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association and a member of Lares Club, the Nevada Country Club and was a 60+ year member of Chapter KK of the PEO Sisterhood.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, James York, and a sister, Mary Louise Roberts.
She is survived by a brother George A. York and wife Pandy, of Ft. Worth, TX.; Two sons, John Carmichael and wife, Christy of Filer, ID and Bob Carmichael and wife, Julie, Lenexa, KS; one daughter, Susan Richardson and husband, Ron, of Cassville, MO; 4 grandchildren; Ryan and Hannah Carmichael, Lenexa, KS; Luke Canfield and Jenelle, Eugene, OR; Sam Canfield and Michelle, Madison, WI; 2 step-grandchildren; Tara Richardson of Columbia, MO and Matt Richardson Springfield, MO; 4 great grandchildren and 2 step-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Martha will be cremated and her ashes interred at the York Family Plot in Osawatomie, KS. Services will be held at 1:00 Saturday, December 29 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, MO.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Nevada Senior Center or a charity of your choosing in c/o Ferry Funeral Home.
