from the Bates County Coroners Office

After a HUGE effort, I am pleased to report that the Bates County Coroner's Office now participates in the 21st Century! In all seriousness, I have selected a software vendor and uploaded all of our case information. This new software will allow me to enter data as I gather it in the field, eliminating wait time on reports and toxicology orders. It will assist me greatly in case management, making my reports to the public more streamlined and the data easier to gather. It will help tremendously with reports to the state, and will also analyze death data and help identify patterns and trends and provide statistical information I previously had to gather by hand.

Data is backed up each evening to a cloud server, reducing my dependence on actual paper files in the office. Also, I can access the data from anywhere via a secure connection, allowing me to do more work on-scene from my response vehicle. This will reduce the box of "to do" paperwork on my desk every day.

This has been a major project and I'm glad to see it completed.

She Wears Red in February

One day out of the year, people across the nation wear red to help bring awareness to heart disease. This year, National Wear Red Day is on Friday, February 1, 2019.

Laura Thiem, better known as Nurse Laura, wears red on National Wear Red Day, and every other day in February as well. She has done this for a number of years in hopes of opening a conversation with her patients – or with anyone – about preventing heart disease.

“Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women – and men,” Nurse Laura said. “I think 28 days is a reasonable commitment.”

National Wear Red Day focuses on females because, according the American Heart Association:
  • Heart Disease is the cause of one in three deaths in women
  • Heart Disease is more deadly than all other forms of cancer (1 in 31 die from breast cancer)
  • Sixty-four percent of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms
“We don’t do things like men do,” Nurse Laura said, referring to that last deadly statistic. “A woman’s warning signs of a heart attack are typically different than a man’s. By the time we recognize them as a heart attack, we are more likely to die.”

Following a heart attack, approximately one in four women will die within the first year, compared to one in five men, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.
Nurse Laura says she has been touched by her patients, and their loved ones, and the devastating consequences of heart disease leading to sudden death, or a stroke related to AFib (atrial fibrillation).

“A cardiac event makes a major impact on a person’s life,” said Nurse Laura. “Heart attacks don’t always kill, but they can really affect a person’s quality of life.”

After a cardiac event, patients may experience depression (in about 33% of patients), and they may struggle with physical activity, sexual function, and their finances.
Prevention vs. Treatment
“People tend to put more thought and money into maintenance on their cars than their bodies. A car can be replaced but the body lasts our lifetime. Preventative care and early detection are key,” said Nurse Laura.
Although you can’t control some things that put you at risk for heart disease – like family history, or a genetic condition like a heart murmur – there are others you can control. Take control by learning whether you are at risk in the following areas.

Blood Pressure Control: Testing is readily available in drugstores, or your provider
Cholesterol Management: Your provider can order a test, or you can purchase kits over-the-counter to test yourself
Tobacco Cessation: Stop using all forms of tobacco. If a cessation program is not available in your area, free online resources may help. Try smokefree.gov, a free tool from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Physical Activity: Just start moving! Even moderate exercise has been shown to improve heart health.
On Motivation
The good news is that even small changes to your diet and lifestyle can improve your heart health and lower your risk by up to 80%, according to the AHA.

“We all make choices,” Nurse Laura said. “For some, taking a pill is easy, but moving your body? That’s hard to do. And I’m right there with them.”

The key, she says, is to figure out what is keeping you from moving, and find a way to work around it. Don’t know where to start? Try a free workout on YouTube. Is it a bum knee, or stiff joints? Try some repetitive actions with your arms and legs while sitting, Nurse Laura suggests. You can also use weights, if you have them, or use cans of soup from your pantry as weights.
21st Century Tools
Some people are encouraged to lead a healthier lifestyle by using products like a Fitbit to keep track of their steps, heart rate and other actions. If you have a smartphone, some of these tools may be found in your iPhone or Google Play app store. Ask your health care provider for a recommendation.

Once you are aware of your risk, it is important to see a health care provider and develop a plan together to lower your risk of heart disease.

Will you wear red this Friday?

Obituary - Kenton Eiffert

Kenton Eiffert died Sunday, January 6, 2019. Services were held January 9, 2019. Donations may be made to the ALS Association, St. Louis Regional Chapter (alsa.org) Kenton was born in Harrisonville, Missouri on October 5, 1957, to Leon and Beverly Eiffert, joining sisters Debbie and Lee Anne. Living on Bird Street, he loved the neighborhood kids and being outdoors with everyone. He attended Harrisonville Elementary and High School, making many friends and holding those friendships close over the years. He loved sports, especially playing baseball (and watching the Kansas City Royals), playing basketball, and water-skiing. The family cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks was a favorite, frequent destination then and for the rest of his life. Here he spent cherished time with his loved ones.

After graduating from high school, Kenton went to college in Rolla, Missouri, where he played on the baseball team and earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Also, he met Jackie there, and they were married in 1980. They soon moved to Houston, Texas, where he worked for Shell Oil. They lived there for 10 years. He and Jackie met many good people in Houston, and again maintained these friendships as the years progressed. In 1991, they moved to Bakersfield, California, where Kenton worked for Shell, which later became AERA. He added many wonderful friendships there and from his Bakersfield neighborhood. They lived there till 2017, raising their children Kristy, Bethany, and Brett. Doing things with his family and friends continued to be Kenton’s first priority, such as frequently attending the kids’ school activities, and taking many trips with them and friends to explore California’s attractions (one being Yosemite National Park where they went camping and hiking every spring for over 25 years with the same core group of friends). Kenton planned many, many gatherings for those he loved around sporting events, including going to many college and pro baseball, basketball, and football games. In 2017 they returned to Missouri to live.

For the past four years, since Kenton was diagnosed with ALS, his family went all out to wring as much out of life with and for him as they could. To mention a few things, they took an Alaskan cruise with Jackie’s family, spent a lot of time at the Lake of the Ozarks, went to more college basketball games including the Final Four in 2016 and 2017, saw several Kansas City Chiefs games, went to Royals spring training several years, and of course, saw many Royals games. He was ecstatic to get to experience their 2015 World Series victory, as well as the one in 1985. In addition, he and Jackie took several road trips; one through the western states and the national parks with their faithful dog of 18 years, Roxy, and another road trip visiting old friends and family. Kenton kept his spirits up and always strived to make those around him feel happy.

His family and friends will always love Kenton and smile as they remember the many good times they spent with him.
