Traffic stop leads to drug arrest in Bates County

On January 7, 2019 a Deputy conducted a traffic stop that resulted in a drug arrest. The driver identified as John H. Schmidt (DOB 7/14/86) failed to maintain his lane by crossing over onto the shoulder multiple times.

The Deputy requested a K-9 Unit to respond to his location. The K-9 conducted a free air sniff of the vehicle and alerted. This gave the Deputy probable cause to search the vehicle.

During the Deputy’s search he located several pills, drug paraphernalia that appeared to have marijuana residue inside them and a small baggie that contained a white crystal substance. The crystal substance tested positive for methamphetamine.

Dispatch advised the Deputy that Schmidt had 13 outstanding warrants out of the City of Butler. Schmidt was taken into custody and transported to the Bates County Jail. He will face additional charges for possession of a controlled substance as well as other charges.
