Man sentenced for stabbing his father in Vernon County

VERNON COUNTY, Mo. - Richard Kirkham appeared in court and entered a guilty plea to first degree assault, domestic assault and first degree burglary.

A judge sentenced him to seven years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

On October 16th, 2017, a Vernon County Sheriff Deputy responded to a stabbing at a home near Sheldon, Missouri. According to documents, Kirkham was outside waiting for authorities to arrive.

The deputy arrested Kirkham and while on the way to jail, confessed that he did unlawfully enter the house through a window, used meth earlier in the day and assaulted and stabbed his dad in the arm.

According to documents, Kirkham said his mother told him he wasn't allowed on the property. Authorities say Kirkham's father tried to make him leave. That's when Kirkham grabbed a knife and the father grabbed a baseball bat and hit Kirkham to avoid being stabbed, according to documents. Kirkham then stabbed him in the arm.

The Prosecutor's Office filed charges of assault, armed criminal action, domestic assault and burglary. He plead guilty and was sentenced to three of those charges.
