Just an update on the weather. It’s going to rain. Now with all the formalities out of the way we wanted to let you know that we are experiencing flooding throughout the county. 

Please please please don’t drive through high water. You’re important to us and we want to make sure you safely wake up in the morning at home.

Parents: please have a conversation with your young drivers about driving in high water and the dangers associated with that.

Obituary - Glen Leroy Gregg

Glen Leroy Gregg, 64, Harrisonville, Missouri departed this life on Saturday, April 28, 2019 at his home.

He is survived by two sons, Mitchell L. Gregg and wife Sharon and Preston G. Gregg and wife Amber J. all of Gunn City, Missouri; two daughters, Stephenie Miller and Samantha K. Gregg both of Lee's Summit, Missouri; 7 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Jim Gregg, Latour, Missouri, Kenny Gregg, Osceola, Missouri; 3 sisters, Gwen Ebeck, Leeton, Missouri, Darla Doody, Osceola, Missouri, Linda Todd, Gunn City, Missouri; other relatives and friends.

Cremation. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.

Obituary - Patricia "Patti" Kristin Winningham

Patricia "Patti" Kristin Winningham, 51, Harrisonville, Missouri departed this life on Monday, April 29, 2019 at the Kansas City Hospice House surrounded by love and family.

She is survived by her husband, Randy Winningham of the home; three daughters, Sarah Mayse and husband Josh, Harrisonville, Missouri, Heidi Winningham, Lee's Summit, Missouri, Molly Winninham, Harrisonville, Missouri; 8 grandchildren, Egypt, Mahala, Korra, Aliyah, Alayna, Octavia, Jewelia and Jackson; her mother and step-father, Marilee and Howard Downing, Yuma, Arizona; two brothers, Bill Herring, Freeman, Missouri, Don Herring, Santa Rosa, California; a sister, Beth Schultheis, Ocala, Florida; other relatives and friends.

Cremation. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date at Crossroads Assembly of God near Harrisonville.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.

Obituary - Ray T. Smith

Ray T. Smith, 97 of Louisburg, Kansas passed away April 28, 2019 at Del Mar Gardens in Overland Park, Kansas. Cremation, with Celebration of Life services 2:00 pm Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel Chapel (660-679-0009).

Friends may gather from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service, also at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions be made to the H.T. Smith Community Park c/o the City of Drexel. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com.

Ray Thomas Smith was born September 15, 1921 in New Lancaster, Kansas to H.T. and Hattie Knepp Smith. He graduated from Paola High School in 1939. Following graduation he attended Kansas State University for one and a half years before entering the US Army during WWII. Returning from the the war, he found California to be home. Ray traveled North America selling Euclid Construction Equipment in the 1940s, and Caterpillar at Shepard Tractor in Los Angeles in the 1950s. While in California, he married and two children were born, Susan and Dennis.

Returning to Drexel in 1964 he joined the family business with H.T. Smith and sister Mary Guey until it ceased operation in 1977. In 1970 he was united in marriage to Wilma Harris Purdon, creating a great upbringing for children Michelle and Greg. Their marriage flourished for 49 wonderful years. After the family business closed, Ray worked for Deems Farm Machinery in Butler and Nevada, Missouri until he retired in 1984.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, son Dennis Smith, grandson Jeff Craig, and sister Muriel Berry. He is survived by his wife Wilma Smith of Louisburg, KS., son Greg Purdon and wife Missy of Louisburg, KS., granddaughters, Sarah and Sophia Purdon, daughter Susan Craig and husband Frank of Hawaii, granddaughter Jennifer Rutt and husband Ryan of Hawaii, and great-granddaughter Carlei Rutt of Hawaii, and Sister Mary Guey and husband Sody of Belton, MO.

Obituary - Kristine Lynn Smith

Kristine Lynn Smith, 52, Harrisonville, MO, died Monday, April 29, 2019 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, MO.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville.

More cows missing near Hume

On April 29, 2019 a Deputy took another report of stolen cattle in the Hume area. The victim stated that on 4/27/19 he received a call from his neighbor saying his gate was open and his cows had gotten out. The victim then went to his property and got all of the cattle back in the field and shut the gate. On 4/28/19 he returned to the property to inventory the cattle and found that 5 cows were missing. He spoke with his neighbors and nobody had seen the cattle. The victim believes the cattle to have been stolen due to not being able to find them and the calves would be crying if the cows were nearby.

The victim described the missing cattle to be 2 full grown red Angus cows with yellow ear tags and 3 red Angus calves missing. He valued them to be around $5200.00.

Road work planned in Cass County

TRAFFIC: MoDOT Kansas City has announced that, starting today (4/30), they will be reducing NB I-49 between Archie and MO Route 7 (towards Clinton) to one lane every day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., for asphalt resurfacing.
 
The closures are expected to last until November 1.
All work will be weather permitting.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and find an alternate route, if necessary, and to use caution when travelling in the area to keep the workers safe.

Obituary - Cody Singleton

Cody D. Singleton age 16 of Osceola, Missouri passed away Saturday, April 27th, as the result of a motor vehicle accident.

Cody Singleton was a member of the The Sac-Osage District Junior Firefighters.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, May 5, at the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

Visitation is scheduled between 12;30 and 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home.

Truck fire in Eldorado Springs

On 4/29/19 around 18:07 hours the El Dorado Springs Fire Department was dispatched to Sonic Drive In for a vehicle fire.

Upon arrival of trucks 2,3,4,5 fire suppression was initiated with 2 1 3/4 inch hand lines and the fire was contained to the engine compartment.

Severe Weather and Heavy Rain Today/Tonight

Several rounds of showers and storms are expected today through Thursday.

Strong to severe storms will be possible today, with best chances south of KC Metro. 

Heavy rains will also lead to an increased flash flood threat, so please remain weather aware. Turn Around, Don't Drown!

Keep a eye to the sky today!

Strong to severe storms expected to begin moving into the area by late morning and/or early afternoon with the severe threat working east with time. There could be some t-storm activity during the morning, but greatest threat will be focused on the afternoon hours.

Damaging winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes will all be possible. In addition, multiple rounds of heavy rainfall will increase flash flooding concerns from Tuesday and continuing through Thursday.

Obituary - John Marland

John Marland, 59, Cleveland, MO, died Saturday, April 20, 2019 at his home. Inurnment to be held at a later date in New Bedford, MA.

John was born February 21, 1960 in New Bedford, MA, the son of James and Jean (Lake) Marland. John married Sheila Ann Cruz on June 20, 1981 in New Bedford. John had lived in Cleveland for the past 28 years. He was an auto mechanic and had worked for various car dealerships, and had worked in the produce department at Price Chopper in Harrisonville. He also raised pigeons.

John was preceded in death by his father and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Sheila, of the home; his mother, Jean Marland, of New Bedford, MA; one brother, Richard Marland, of Florida; and three sisters, Christine Magalhaes, of Florida, Jane Maltese, of Maine, and Paula Lima, of New Bedford.

City of Butler seeking Bid

BCSO: Uptick in local thefts

On April 26, 2019 a Deputy responded to County Road 7508 in Hume to take a report of a cattle theft. The victim stated that since February she had lost around 5 calves and believes that someone is stealing them. The calves were black in color and were about a month old when they went missing. Each calf had a value of $350.00.

On April 27, 2019 a Deputy took a report of stolen saddles from a farm located on BB highway in Butler, MO. The victim advised the Deputy he observed a vehicle leaving his driveway and followed the vehicle to Ballard where it then took off at a high rate of speed. The victim then returned to the residence and noticed a window was forced open and 4 saddles were missing. The saddles included 2 Mexico saddles valued at $250.00 each a Hereford saddle worth $400.00 and a pony saddle worth $50.00.

The Deputy was later advised that 2 of the saddles were for sale on Facebook. An area canvass was conducted and Deputies believe they were able to locate the residence where the pictures of the saddles were taken.

On April 28, 2019 a Deputy responded to a residence on Olive street in Rich Hill, MO to take a report of a burglary. The victim stated that when he came home from work he noticed that the lock on his bedroom door had been picked and his window was open. His PS4, T.V. and 50 to 60 games were missing.

The investigations are ongoing.

When Lydia Reynolds graduated from Adrian High School in 2015, she was determined to pursue a degree in nursing and she's done just that!

This Saturday, May 4, 2019, Lydia graduates from Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, MO, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Lydia will then begin her career in the Intensive Care Unit at Belton Research in June.

Old Fat Men show their moves

Five teams participated in the 3rd annual Miami Alumni basketball games on Saturday. The teams were Five Finger Ball Slingers, Gang Green, The Baseline Leaners and Jailblazers. However, team Old Fat Guys featuring Miles Nieder, Tommie Hutchison, Terry West, Brandon Nieder, Kyle Dubray, Ben Cameron and Dylan Fink finished on top, winning the competition.

Plans are already in place for the 4th annual tournament next year.

Fairgrounds gets a makeover...

Local 4-H clubs came out in full force last Saturday for the first Bates County Fair Board Work Day. 4-Hers and parents picked up trash, washed windows, cleaned out a storage building, and painted the arena fence. Thanks to all who came out and helped! This is why Bates County 4-Hers are awesome. The next work day is scheduled for May 18th.
