Appleton City Fair set for June 6th through 8th

Anyone is welcome to come join the ACHS Alumni for a day of memories and fellowship. The ACHS Alumni Luncheon is Saturday May 25, 2019.

Reservations in advance are $12. Mail them to Patti Purvis Young x86, 101 E 3rd St., ACMO 64724. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and the price will be $18 at door. Reservations help to have sufficient food and seating arrangements by class. Class pictures will be taken at noon time by Bartz Photography. Please report alumni deaths since May, 2018 to Linda Lampkin. The following class activities are planned: Classes of 1944, 1949, 1954, 1959, 1969, 1974 and 1984 will have lunch at 11:30 at the high school and meet in the HS afterwards; 1969 - 2:00 at the Depot; 1984 - 3:00 at Harmony Cemetery then 4:00 at The Pond;.1991 - 11:30 Retrieve their time capsule in front of school followed by a gathering at Shelley Hough Unell’s home; 1999 - 3:00 at the City Lake. Other classes ending in 4 or 9 reunions are unknown at press time. Call your class president for information. The Alumni Ballgame will be Sunday beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Bill Long Memorial Ball Field. Remember contributions to the Scholarship Fund create a legacy for future generations. The 27th annual Montrose Festival, the “Die-Hard Fans For Decades”, is May 24 - 26. Friday evening will be the Old Timers baseball game at the park as well as the Kids Run at 8:15 p.m., Glow Run 5K at 9:00 p.m. and Montrose Mile at 10:00 p.m.. Saturday will start with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the VFW and lunch at 10:00. The 15h annual car show begins at 9:00 a.m., bake sale at 9:00 a.m., vendors, concession stands (walking tacos, ice cream, and snow cones) and more. The diaper derby and toddler swimsuit shows start at 9:00 ($2 entry fee). For the kids, Sprinkles the clown will be back, as well as bounce houses, inflatables, petting zoo, train rides, Ted E. Bears Toy Factory and kids games. The announcement of this year's Home Town Hero is at 12:50. The parade begins at 1:00 p.m. with registration at the Montrose High School. Following the parade will the annual Fried Chicken Dinner 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. a kids scavenger hunt, chicken drop and Museum open after the parade. The Scavenger Hunt starts at 2:30 p.m. and Corn Hole 3:30 p.m. For your evening pleasure, DJ Garrett Hilte will be rocking the night away starting at 9:00 p.m. The gutter party breakfast starts at 11:00 p.m. On Sunday, softball starts at noon. There will be beer olympics and music at 5:00 p.m. and DJ Garrett Hilte in the evening. The AC VFW and Auxiliary have announced their Memorial Day plans. Buddy Poppies will be given out in the area this week. Please give generously. Sunday, May 26 the VFW will be at Round Prairie Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. The VFW will then go to Meyers Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Memorial Day, May 27, they start off at Forest Park in Appleton City to give honors at the War Memorial at 8:00 a.m. Then they will go to Appleton City Cemetery, where the flag will be lowered at 8:30 and honors at the grave of Rollin Schell. The VFW will The VFW then goes to Rockville at 9:30. They will go to Taberville at 10:00 with honors at the graves of Leonard Greer & Darlene Littlejohn. Finally, they go to Mt. Zion at 11:00 to honor John Carvall. Please help the VFW help our local veterans and honor our deceased veterans. Any and all are welcomed to join the services.

Quasquacentennial 1995 Pictorial Books may now be purchased at Community First or St. Clair Co. Banks. Make checks for $25 to AC Park-SQC. Extras were ordered. This is the first time this book has been printed. If you haven't purchased one in the last 2 weeks you do not have this book.

The Alumni Game and Homerun Derby will take place Sunday, May 26 at the Bill Long Memorial Ball Feld (next to the tennis courts). The Homerun Derby begins at 4:30 and the Game at 5:30 p.m. Teams will be divided into even and odd years. Registration is $30 per player and includes a free T-shirt jersey. There will be concessions including a pulled pork sandwich dinner. Everyone is welcome to join and catch up with old friends. All proceeds go back to the youth and AC community. It will be divided 50% to AC Field of Pride Project and 50% to the AC Optimist Club.

The Appleton City Museum, 503 N. Maple will be open Friday May 24 1:30-4:30 and on Saturday, May 25 10-4. Saturday hours will provide an opportunity for the ACHS Alumni to visit before or after the luncheon. All visitors are welcome to see what is new at the museum.

Free private tennis lessons are offered to all current or former players and anyone who want to improve their technique or strategies or first time players. People of almost any age and skills can learn to play tennis. Lessons are held at the tennis courts at Donnohue-Dugan Park starting the week of May 26. Rackets and balls will be provided. To set up appointments for your private lessons or if you have questions, call Dennis Dunham at 476-2151 or 476-5514 or Tommy Payton at 816-863-6624. They prefer 1 -4 prospects for each session. Open tennis is every day 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tennis is exercise that is fun!

Volunteers will again be needed Saturday, June 1, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. or rain date of Sunday, June 2, 2018, 9:00 a.m. to pick up the rosebuds. AIM and VFW of Montrose will be co-hosting Movie Under the Stars 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 31 in the lot behind the VFW and City Hall. Bring your blankets, chairs, snacks and coolers. Spend the evening watching “Homeward Bound” at this family night event for all to share. For questions or suggestions, please contact Kristina Klass. They are looking at possibly doing this the last Fridays of the months of June, July and August.

The AC Pool should open June 1. Hours will be 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. 7 days a week. Wednesdays and Sundays are $1.00. The rest are $3.00. Children under 3 years of age are free with an adult. Passes will be $50 for the first person and $20 per additional family member. You can purchase passes beginning May 25 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the pool. Pool parties for 1-20 people will be $75, For 21-40, add an additional $25 for a total of $100. This is for 2 hours (5:30 to 7:30 p.m.) with lifeguards included. You are welcome to bring in outside food and drinks (NO ALCOHOL) for your party. Please call the pool for more information at 660 476 2156.

The Appleton City R-II Preschool Program is currently enrolling for the 2019 - 2020 School Year. Applications can be turned in at the Elementary Office, during regular office hours, through the end of May. However, spots will fill up fast, so please complete and submit all needed paperwork as quickly as possible. Applications can be found on the school’s website at: https://www.appletoncity.k12.mo.us/academics/preschool/. Applications are also available in the office. In addition, you will need to submit copies of the following before enrollment can be complete: child's medical exam, immunization record, birth certificate and Social Security card.

The AC Fair will be June 6-8 in the evenings. The theme is "A Salute to Volunteers”. Proud Sponsor and booth forms are available at City Hall. Prairie Queen Garden will have their Flower Show at the Fair on Thursday and Friday. Flowers are brought for showing on Thursday morning from 8:00-11:30. Let’s make this the best showing of our gorgeous flowers that have surprised us all with their beauty this year. You can bring only one or a variety. There will be a smoked meat dinner to benefit Mike Lawson 5:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday, June 15 at the Montrose Community Building. Dinner includes pulled pork, sides, dessert and a drink. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, bake sale and live auction by auctioneer, Kevin Wade. Mike was diagnosed with stomach cancer and is undergoing aggressive treatment. He is the owner of Lawson’s Garage; therefore, he has independent (self-paid) insurance and limited income at this time. 100% of the proceeds from this event will go to the Mike Lawson Love Fund. AC City Hall is asking businesses to adopt a sidewalk planter on Main Street by watering the flowers that will be planted in them. If you are willing to help by watering the flowers, please contact City Hall at 476-2361.

This year’s honored ACHS 50 year class is the class of 1969. Their class picture is now hanging in the Farm House Restaurant. Other photos are the honored classes of 1964, 1959 and 1954. These class composites, which hung in the old high school hallways, are now stored at the Appleton City Museum. Appreciation is extended to Farm House for displaying the pictures.

Myers Cemetery meeting in the Pleasant Ridge Community will be Sunday, May 26 at 2:00 p.m. Please pickup faded arrangements and use non-breakable containers. Contributions may be mailed to Gina Raybourn, 708 N. Poplar, Appleton City, MO 64724.

AC Dog Jog is a 5K walk/run on June 15 at Forest Park in Appleton City. The run will start at 9:30 a.m. This event is being organized by "Caringby7", Olivia Engeman, Natalie Nitchals, Kaylee O'Farrell, Olivia Dowell, Hallie Harkrader, Kinley Helwig and Kaylee Mott, a group of local 5th/6th grade students just wanting to make a difference. Funds raised will go to House Of Hound, a non-kill animal shelter located in Butler, MO. House of Hound is a small rural shelter, yet they have saved over 1000 dogs since starting 2014. More information can be found on their Facebook event page "AC Dog Jog". They are currently looking for both runners and sponsors. Registration and donation forms can be found on their event page or at H&E Vet Clinic.

The Ellett Memorial Hospital Foundation was established in 2000 by a local couple to benefit and carry out the purposes of Ellett Memorial Hospital. The Foundation has played a major role in the Hospital’s recent renovation/expansion project. The Foundation is a 501c3 organization and plays an important role in ensuring the future of the Hospital by providing an avenue for individuals, groups and corporations to lend their financial support through tax-deductible contributions. The Ellett Memorial Hospital Foundation would like to extend an invitation to the community to assist with this project.
