The Yellow Rosebud Cemetery Project at the Appleton City cemetery is scheduled for Monday, May 20, 2018 at 9:00 a.m., or rain date Tuesday, May 21, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Volunteers and support are needed and appreciated. This year’s goal is to match last year’s success. To accomplish this will mean placing approximately 2,400 large, single, silk, Yellow Rosebuds at the headstones of graves in the oldest sections of the cemetery; the area from the east road to the west road north of the flag pole. Dean Ellis, originator of the Yellow Rosebud Project, began decorating graves as a 5 or 6 year old boy with his maternal grandparents Rose and Ellzie Smith in this same cemetery. As they decorated, he noticed many graves had no flowers. This saddened him and he questioned why. His Grandmother’s answer was that they were so old there was probably no one left to decorate. This stayed with Dean 60+ years and eventually has resulted in the Yellow Rosebud Cemetery Project. Dean is a member of ACH class of 1960 and a Vietnam veteran, 1967-1968. Rosebuds, and everything needed will be provided at the cemetery (some rose buds are reused from last year, if suitable, others new as needed). Volunteers will again be needed Saturday, June 1, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. or rain date of Sunday, June 2, 2018, 9:00 a.m. to pick up the rosebuds. To support, volunteer or for additional information contact: City Hall at 660-476-2631, Jane Costello at 660-492-9700, Donald Yoss at 660-492-7218 or Dean and Sharon Ellis at 417-844-5244.

One of the highest input costs for a cattle operation is meeting cattle daily nutrient needs. One way to reduce the cost is to increase grazing forage consumption and reduce grain-based supplements. Two ways to do that include increasing forage growth and utilization efficiency as well as forage quality consumed. University of Missouri Extension agriculture specialists, Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) employees and Missouri State Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) work together to educate the public on utilizing MiG in their cattle operation through regional grazing schools. Upcoming regional grazing schools include: May 9- 10 at the First Baptist Church, Osceola, Mo. Fee, which includes meals and materials, is $130 per person or $150 per couple sharing materials. For registration and more information, please contact the St. Clair County Mo. SWCD office at 417-646-8108, ext. 3. May 14 - 16 at the Vernon County Fairgrounds home economics building, Nevada, Mo. Fee, which includes meals and materials, is $130 per person or $150 per couple sharing materials. To register or for more information, please contact the Vernon County Mo. SWCD office at 417-667-8137, ext. 3. These schools have limits on the number of attendees, so if you are interested in attending please contact the offices as soon as possible. To receive cost share benefits, you need to attend one school.
