History Achieves: Nevada State Hospital

Nevada, Missouri - The Missouri State Hospital for the Insane (No. 3) in Nevada was established in 1885, becoming the third asylum in Missouri.

The first building to be built was the distinctive Kirkbride main building. The massive building was completed in 1887, and was the largest single building in the state of Missouri at that time. The beautiful towers and ornamentation were removed during the 1950's with the building itself being torn down in 1999.

The Missouri State Hospital Number 3 has gone by several names. In the early years, the sign in the lobby referred to it as "Lunatic Asylum Number 3".

Later it was referred to as the "State Hospital for Insane, Number 3", and the "State Asylum Number 3." Eventually, the facility was referred to by the politically correct, "State Hospital Number 3." - Information courtesy of Forgotten Missouri Facebook Page
